75 Years Ago-March 10, 1944

Brown resigns

Supt. H. C. Brown’s resignation, which becomes effective at the end of the current school year, was accepted by the local school board at its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening of this week. Mr. Brown has been superintendent here for the past six hears.

Bjornson honored

The Order of the Icelandic Falcon was bestowed upon Hjalmar Bjornson, former editor of The Mascot, in ceremonies at the University Y.M.C.A. Tuesday evening of this week.

Johnson-Sicard

On Friday, March 3, at 2 p.m., Esther Sicard of St. Paul and Pfc. John M. Johnson, a son of J.T. Johnson, were united in marriage in the Chapel of the St. Paul Evangelical Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Hubert VanKeulen are the parents of a girl born Saturday, March 4th. A girl to be named Marilyn Elaine was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sigurd Dahl on Monday, March 6th. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Borson are the parents of a boy born Sunday, March 5 at a Marshall hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Yeo are the parents of a boy born Thursday, March 2. The boy is named James Douglas.

Civil Defense inventory

Gary Buysse and Pat Dero, coordinators of this community’s Civil Defense Unit, last week checked sandbags. In the case of flooding, the fire siren will be sounded in one, long steady wail and it is hoped, then, the able bodied men will turn out for the emergency.

125 attend Cub Scout Banquet

Approximately 125 Cub Scouts, their families and guests, were present Sunday evening for the annual blue and gold banquet and during the program cub master Douglas Konold handed out the following awards: Bobcat - Harvey Myhre, David DeVlaeminck, Mike Bottelberghe, Gary Wigness, Robert Novotny, David Gorecki, Scott Lanners, Tom Alleckson, Tim Koppien, John Gunderson, Charles Savoie, Marty Prellwitz, Daniel Thompson, Kevin Hebrank, David Pennings, Paul Hoberg, William Monahan, Richard Myhre; Bear - Tom Hanson, Scott Josephson, Kevin Jackson, Gary Wigness, Robert Novotny, Mike Bottelberghe, Charles Konold. Webelos awards were handed out to Scott Holien (engineer), Lanie Merritt (athlete), and Kevin Jackson (silver arrow).

FHA Conventioneers

Seven members of the local chapter of Futer Homemakers of America examined stuffed animals they had made for mentally retarded children at the Brainerd State Hospital before they went to the state FHA convention in St. Paul last weekend. They are: Suzette Rye, Robin Pesch, Laurie Wigness, Susan Orsen, state president, who delivered the keynote speech at the banquet Friday evening, Sue Eischens, Lynn Kockelman and Margaret Pennings.

High school speech winners

These students earned places in the March 5th speech tournament at Fairmont: Laurie Anderson, Nicolle Coequyt, Rachel Rabaey, Eric Alleckson, Arra Ross and Jessica Nuytten.

Junior high speech winners

These students earned places at the Marshall Speech Meet on Saturday: Amy Johnson, Shawnna VanHecke, Sarah VanMoorlehem, Bridget Kamies, Shannon Haugen, Nicole Stiklestad, Ryan Winter, Kari Gorecki, Nancy Loyson, Pat Engels, Paul Nuytten and Angie Guza.

Local bowling champion

Edgar Gautefall of the Minnota Manor has been “knocking down pins” at a regular rate at the weekly bowling events at the Manor. Since a resident of the Manor five years ago, Gautefall has been a bowling winner over 100 times. That recognition earned him the bowling trophy.
