75 Years Ago-March 24, 1944

Receive Habit

Miss Madeline Shimanski, a graduate of St. Catherine’s College and formerly a teacher in the Minneota high school and Miss Betty Ann Gits, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gits of Minneota, received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph at ceremonies Monday of this week, March 20, at St. Joseph’s novitiate in St. Paul. Miss Schimanski is known in religion as Sister Mary David and Miss Gits is known as Sister St. Gregory.

Personals

Mr. and Mrs. Norman Olafson are the parents of a boy born on Tuesday, March 21. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Janssen of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, are the parents of a girl born on February 25th. The child has been named Priscilla Jane. Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Meger are the parents of a boy born Friday, March 17. The boy is to be named Patrick. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Locy received word Monday that Mr. and Mrs. Henry Focke, Noonan, N.D., are the parents of a boy born Saturday, March 18.

50 Years Ago-March 27, 1969

Work started on church addition

Work was started Monday morning on a 24x26 addition with full basement to St. Paul’s Lutheran church of Minneota. Firemen called twice in week Minneota fire fighters were called on for help twice during this past week - last Thursday at 8:00 a.m. to the Farmers and Merchants Supply Co. elevator and Saturday at about 11:00 a.m. to the Gordon Johnson farm eight miles northeast of Minneota. MHS boy wins speaking contest Paul Fixen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fixen of Minneota, won the Region 5 FFA extemporaneous speaking contest which was held at the Willmar vocational-technical school on March 11th. Fier wins top dairyman award Recognition for high producing cows and herds was given to selected herd owners at the Lyon-Lincoln DHIA annual meeting at Marshall last week and association members also were presented with the annual reports of the past year. Receiving the premier dairyman trophy for the highest three year herd average of butterfat production was Tony Fier of Taunton, MN.

25 Years Ago-March 23, 1994

Supervising the work

Ed Finnegan, owner of the local Super Valu Store, watched as Kevin Guttormsson, who works for Doug’s Electric of Minneota, work on one of the check-out stations at the store this week. The store is being equipped with new scanners, which necessitates some changes being made. The new system will be “live” on Wednesday, March 30.

Enjoying new office

Gary Buysse is enjoying his new office located on Jefferson Street in downtown Minneota. He deals in a number of financial planning areas as an agent for Security Mutual Life. He was working out of his home and now enjoys the new office at the former Haas Bakery building that has been standing vacant for some time.

Freshmen members of the Math League earn third place

The ninth grade Math League students earned this trophy for their third place finish in competition this season. They are: Kayla Ahern, Bridget Kamies, Jessica Jackson, Joel Hagen, Pat Engels, Paul DeCock, Ted Bottelberghe, Brad Heggeseth and Coach Judy Hagen.

All-Conference Honors

Two members of the Minneota Girls’ Basketball team were selected for All-Conference honors this week. Jami Rolbiecki was named to the first team and Jodi Sussner was named to the second team.

Named for basketball honors

Two members of the Minneota Boys’ Basketball team were named for special honors in the Camden Conference this week. Chuck Josephson earned an Honorable Mention and Duane Kockelman was named to the first team.
