75 Years Ago-August 25, 1944

Health Champ

Audrey Tillemans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Tillemans, was named Lyon County health champion of girls at the 4-H Club Achievement day held at Marshall last Saturday.

Orsen-Engberg

Miss Pauline Engberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N.P. Engberg, became the bride of Walter L. Orsen, son of Mrs. Annie Orsen, at Hope Lutheran church on Sunday.

Country News-Taunton

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Snyder had their twins christened Sunday. They were given the names Donald and Ronald.

50 Years Ago-August 28, 1969

Wins Omaha trip

Jimmy Myhre, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Myhre, won a trip to the Ak-Sar-Ben livestock show at Omaha in September when he exhibited a Hereford steer at the Lyon County Fair last week. Last year he won a Market Livestock Show trip to the Twin Cities with a steer.

Andy Traen gets Hole-in-one

Andy Traen of Taunton shot a hole-in-one at the local golf course last Wednesday. He hit the ace on the sixth hole, 221 yards. This is the second hole-in-one scored at the golf course.

Wrecking damaged bridge

Members of the county highway crew of Minneota were busy the first part of the week starting to tear out the bridge near the John Myhre farm, south of town. This bridge was badly damaged by last spring’s high water and has not been used since.

Minister Winner in Golf Tourney

Rev. Dean S. Finke, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, was declared the “club champion” at the conclusion of the golf tourney which was held at the local golf course last Sunday. The two who came in second and third in the championship flight were Richard Borson and Don Venne.

Local Business Closes Monday

Russ Melcher, who had operated a cafe here for about a year (the former Ed’s Cafe), closed the doors to that business Monday. D.J. Mootz, in transaction completed Sunday, bought the building from Ed Polman, who now lives at Clarkfield.

Installed into Scout Honor Lodge

Three Boy Scouts from Minneota, Steven and Kevin Baugher and Douglas Jackson, were installed last week end into Tonkawampus Lodge No. 69 of the Order of the Arrow. Installation into the lodge is an honor bestowed on a Boy Scout “as a camper and one who lives according to the Scout promise and law.”

Ladies’ Club Tournament

The Countryside Golf Club auxiliary met on August 21, for their women’s club tournament with 21 golfers participating. The club champion was Mrs. Don Venne and the runner-up, Mrs. Andy Traen.

Twenty-six seniors vie for Bug Days Queen

This past week, twenty-six senior girls announced that they were willing to compete for the title of Boxelder Bug Days Queen and they are: Nicole Briley, Jessica Burke, Kristy Buysse, Donna Decrock, Laura DeSmet, Laura Engels, Stacie Guza, Melissa Johnson, Sara Kimpe, Lori Laleman, Jamie Lanners, Renee Meulebroeck,Wendy Moorse, Jessica Nuytten, Shalon Patch, Christine Pesch, Carrie Pohlen, Jami Rolbiecki, Stacy Sanow, Deanna Stienessen, Elaine Telste, Kim Tillemans, Tesa Traen, Rhonda Verschelde, Becky Vlaminck, Cindy Vlaminck.

Philatelic cancellation available

In honor of Boxelder Bug Days, the United States Postal Service has authorized a special pictorial cancellation for Minneota on Saturday, September 10th. Our 1994 logo of the five bugs will be used in the cancellation, as well as the Boxelder Bug Days Station, the date, and our city name, state, and zip code.

Bubba’s Bar Undefeated in League

These members of the Bubba’s Bar softball team claimed the Championship trophy in the league tournament on Sunday: Bennie Nielsen, Todd Berckes, Les Engler, Bob (Bubba) DePestel, Jim Morgan, Jerry Traen, Bryan Sharp, Steve Przymus, Pat Boerboom, Clark Corbin, Troy Halverstron, Frank Zastrow, and Duane Boerboom.

Dorie Teigland captures ladies golf title

These ladies were all successful in their golfing during the annual Ladies Club Tournament on Sunday: Bernie Janssen, Lonna Stensrud, Lois Spanton, Champion Dorie Teigland, Connie Kockelman, Mary Myhre and Clara Obler.
