75 Years Ago-October 20, 1944

Funeral services were held at Hemnes Lutheran church south of here Wednesday afternoon for Adolph Heggeseth who died suddenly at his farm Sunday morning, October 15.

Funeral Friday

Funeral services will be conducted here on Friday afternoon for Bjarni Jones, who died on Wednesday morning. Mr. Jones was 85 years old at the time of his death, and was a resident of the Minneota community for over 50 years.

Buried Thursday

Funeral services were conducted at the St. Paul’s Icelandic Lutheran church Thursday afternoon of this week for Burdette J. Harvey, who died at University Hospital in Minneapolis Sunday. Mr. Harvey was married to the former Dora Askdal, who survives him.

50 Years Ago-October 23, 1969

Two Minneota College Students killed in S.D. Auto Crash

Two college students whose parents live in this village were killed early Sunday morning in a three-car accident two miles east of Madison, South Dakota. One was Robert Anderson, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Juston Anderson, a senior at Dakota State college of that city near which the two died. The other was John Thomas Christianson, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Christianson, a sophomore at Southwest Minnesota State College at Marshall.

Minneota High Student Cited

A letter of commendation for high performance in the 1969 National Merit qualifying test has been awarded to Anne DeCock of the Minneota high school. She was among 39,000 students in the U.S. who scored in the upper two percent of those who are expected to graduate from high school in 1970.

Married 50 years

A large group of relatives and friends honored Mr. and Mrs. Ben Pesek, rural Taunton, on their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 18, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius church, Taunton.

Huge Squash at Taunton

Dennis Stoks, a fifth grader in the school at Taunton and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stoks, was shown with a 48-pound banana squash which the Stoks family raised in the garden last summer. Mrs. Stoks said the seed came from Herman Buesing, who raised a 56-pound one last year.

Local Ambulance Idea Endorsed

A local ambulance staffed by volunteers, received overwhelming endorsement from area township officials of Lyon county at a meeting called to mull over the matter Monday evening. About 75 municipal officials from Taunton and townships of Lincoln and Yellow Medicine and Lyon County, were present along with members of the council of Minneota and several interested volunteers.

25 Years Ago-October 19, 1994

Community bids farewell

Pastor Simon and Nancy Fensom will be leaving the community this month, as they accepted the call from Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. A community Farewell Reception is planned for Sunday, October 23, from 2-4 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran church.

Firefighters give timely demonstration

The first graders at the Minneota Public School toured the Minneota Fire Hall last week during Fire Prevention Week. Scott Holien and Jim Verschelde showed the students the life-saving equipment in the ambulance and fire hall.

Action at the net

The Lakers met defeat when they came to Minneota on Thursday night, as the Vikings took the three games in quick succession. Intense play at the net, such as this high hit by Marcy Jeremiason, helped to put the games away. The Vikings now enter the Sub-Section III tournament play, going against RTR on October 22 at 6:30 p.m. with SSU the host of the tournament.

Local Provider Tops in Lyon County

Jolene Schroepfer was chosen to be Provider of the Year for 1994-95, according to the Lyon County Licensed Family Day Care Association.
