75 Years Ago-July 31, 1942

Return from Camp

The seventeen Minneota Girl Scouts, who returned last Saturday from a week’s camping at Green Lake, report a very enjoyable outing. Accompanying them to guide and direct their activities were three leaders, Mrs. P. H. Giewitz, Mrs. Bernie Cole and Miss Arlene Hanson.

On the Hospital Staff

A staff of American surgeons and physicians, members of a Harvard unit, is organizing a huge military hospital in a small Australia town for treatment of American fighting men. Dr. Eric Sanderson, son of Minneota’s Dr. E. T. Sanderson, is a member of the group. The hospital will be one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Writes from Australia

A letter from Private First Class Bernard Tillemans, now stationed with the American troops in Australia, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Tillemans, of this city, states that he is pleased to receive The Mascot. He speaks very highly of the hospitality of the Australians. They made every effort to make the Fourth of July an enjoyable occasion for the American Soldiers down there. One of the interesting events he attended was the Australian football match of the year.

Brother Dies in Norway

Hans Grong had news that his brother, Olav, had died. Miss Rokkum, his niece, also reported that her father, now 60 years old, had been detained in a concentration camp for some time for refusing to teach Nazism, but was now released. Mr. Grong’s mother, now eighty years of age, is living new Krestiandsund N., Norway.

Dies in Glenboro

Word has been received by relatives here of the death last Monday, July 27th, of Mrs. Sigridur Josephson of Glenboro, Manitoba. A stroke was the cause of her death. Mrs. Josephson is well-known in this community, having lived here for many years before moving to Canada. Her children are Frank Josephson of near Minneota, Mrs. Aarskaug of Madison, Mrs. Frederika White of Breckenridge and Helgi Josephson of Hanley Falls.

50 Years Ago-August 3, 1967

Narrow Escape

Alouis Vlaminck who farms about seven miles southwest of Minneota, narrowly escaped death or serious injury last Wednesday when he “knocked himself out” inside the ladder chute near the top of one of the silos on his farm and it was Larry Rafnson, an employee of Obe Electric of Minneota, who kept him from dropping 50 feet or more onto a concrete slab at the base of the silo.

Open House Friday for business here

Jerry’s Supply House, which is located in what has commonly been known as the “Corner Cafe building” here is holding open house Friday of this week, according to an announcement advertisement in this issue of the Mascot. Jerry Vlaminck is proprietor of this new Minneota business and his invitation to visit next Friday is extended to all.

Participating in National Finals

Ann Dalager, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Dalager, left last Thursday, accompanied by Karen Canton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Canton of Taunton, for Elko, Nevada, where she was to participate this week in the National High School Rodeo finals. She took her horse, “Pepper” and the girls were to join other riders from this state and form a “caravan” to the rodeo, which started Monday and was to continue through Sunday. Three hundred contestants from 21 states were to compete at Elko for national titles.

Birth Announcement

Greg and Nona Gottskalkson of rural Canby are the proud parents of a baby girl born on Monday, July 20, weighing 7 lbs. 6 oz. She has been given the name Kassandra Marie and grandparents are Fred and Marlene Gottskalkson of rural Porter and Leonard and Audrey Ahlschlager of Minneota. Eleanor Gottskalkson of rural Porter is the baby’s great-grandmother.

Local farm couples take advantage of Linder Farm Network trip to Thunder Bay

This past week a number of farm couple traveled with the Linder Farm Network tour to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The group left from Willmar on July 21 and returned on July 24. The group numbered about 40 couples, traveling in two motor coaches with Lynn Ketelsen serving as the tour host. The agricultural tour gave the folks a chance to mix business with pleasure, as they saw the crops of the land and got a taste of how the people live there. Those included in the tour were: Norman and Lillian Larson, Donald and Pat Fier, Earl and Patricia Buysse, and Bernard and Loretta Buysse, all from Minneota; Harry and Martha Stassen from Taunton; Geraldine Hauge and Barbara Lenz from Marshall; Roy and Stella Jerzak and Leo Shaikoski from Ivanhoe; and James and Edna Regnier from Lynd.
