75 Years Ago-Aug. 14, 1942

Farmer stricken in harvest field

Joseph DeSutter, well known Ghent farmer, died Monday while working in the harvest field at his farm in Grandview township. He was a brother of A. E. DeSutter and Mrs. Henry Buysse of Minneota. A large number of friends and relatives from here attended the funeral which was held yesterday morning from St. Eloi church in Ghent.

Win League Series

The Minneota baseball team defeated Lake Benton by a score of 8 to 5 last Sunday on the three game series for top rank in the upper bracket of the Southwestern Minnesota League. Next Sunday the locals play Canby, lower bracket winners, here in the first of the three-game series for championship of the league. The odds are on Minneota to win, in which case our boys will go to the regional tournament.

Veterinarian opens office in Minneota

Dr. Wm. W. Merritt this week opened an office in the Dero building, next door to the Economy Auto Accessories, for the practice of veterinary medicine. Dr. Merritt is a graduate of the veterinary college of the Texas A & M, receiving his diploma in May of this year. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Merritt of the Porter community and was born and reared on the farm.

Lyon county selectees in August call to report at Marshall Tuesday morning

The following named men have been selected for induction by the local board. They shall report to the board at the New Atlantic Hotel, Marshall, MN at 7:00 a.m. on August 18, 1942: whereupon they shall be sent to an induction station of the United States Army at Fort Crook, Neb. From Minneota - Bjorn Freman Schram, Donald Herbert Simning, Norman Telmer Torgerson. From Taunton - Raymond Anthony Panneck.

Hardware to receive “Pioneer” award

V. V. Gislason Hardware of Minneota will be honored next week by the 70th convention of the Minnesota Retail Hardware association. The firm will receive the association’s 50-year “Pioneer” award in recognition of the half-century of service to area residents and to the hardware industry.

11 girls rival for princess crown

On opening night of the 1967 Minnesota State Fair August 25, one of eleven beautiful young dairy farm girls will be crowned Princess Kay of the Milky Way XIV under the sponsorship of the American Dairy Association of Minnesota. One of these is Carla Rae Larson of Minneota who will represent Region XI. She is 18, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Larson of Minneota.

On trip to Seattle

This group of 27 Luther Leaguers of Hope Lutheran church left by bus last Wednesday for the National Luther League convention held at Seattle. The youths are: Gary Ramert, Beatrice Jorgensen, Marc Christianson, Janet Christianson, Mike Rye, Carolyn Rye, Margaret Rye, Elaine Myhre, Gladys Myhre, Darcie Wigness, Alan Geiwitz, Wendy Geiwitz, Connie Dero, Susan Oresen, Debbie Christianson, Tom Christianson, Linette Okrina, Roxanne Lamphere, Royal Hettling, Bill Pennings, Ron Amundson, Steve Larson, Greg Yeo, Aaron Esping, Fraser Geiwitz, Ann Dalager, Eric Heggeseth.

25 Years Ago-Aug. 12, 1992

Earns trophy and thanks

Ashley Winter, 8-year-old daughter of Deb and Terry Winter of Minneota, was the winner of the recent contest held at the Minneota swimming pool. The contest staged by the Muscular Dystrophy Association, was held from July 13-31, with interested children raising pledges from friend and neighbors. Ashley raised $67 for the MDA.

Winning 4-H fair booth

The Westerheim Flashing Stars 4-H Club won the top award for their booth “4-H: A Role Worth Developing” at the Lyon County Fair.

Nordland banner wins top prize

Nordland Top-Notchers 4-H Club won top prize with their “Soaring to New Heights” banner at the Lyon County Fair.
