75 Years Ago-Aug. 28, 1942

Vikings Champions Hail the Champions!

The Minneota baseball team defeated Canby 3 to 2 in the second and last game of the championship series last Sunday, at Canby. Thus they won not only a thrilling eleven inning game, but also the title of champions of the Southwestern Minnesota League.

Barn destroyed Friday

Limestone-Alta Vista, Aug. 25 — A fire at Frank Jerzak’s due to spontaneous combustion of green alfalfa hay led to the entire destruction of the main barn. The loss occurred about six o’clock last Friday evening, and the Minneota and Porter fire departments were unable to save the building. Ten sets of harnesses, fourteen tons of hay and a new cream separator were also destroyed.

Taunton man gives up postmaster to serve in Army

Taunton, Aug. 25—Postmaster Raymond Panneck is spending his two weeks leave at this home in Taunton. Private Panneck has recently been inducted into the United States Army. His place at the post office has been taken by his sister, Miss Frances Panneck. Minneota Joy Theatre Shows Call out the Marines with Victor McLaglen, Edmund Lowe plus 3 Stooges Comedy.

50 Years Ago-Aug. 31, 1967

She’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way!

Brown-haired, blue-eyed Carla Rae Larson, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Larson who farm six miles south of Minneota, was named Princess Kay of the Milky Way XIV at the Minnesota State Fair last Friday evening. She received her crown from Linda Kottke, of Glencoe, last year’s princess, and was selected for the honor from a group of 11 candidates. The selection was announced before a preview-night audience in the grandstand at the fair and Carla’s first words on hearing that she had been chosen were “I don’t believe it”. The pretty Minneota farm girl will spend the next year touring the nation and the state on behalf of the dairy industry. Previous to her selection for the state honors, Carla Rae had won a dairy princess crown at the Lyon County Dairy Day at Russell last June and a few weeks later won the Region XI crown at Pipestone.

Local FFA members in state fair events

Minneota FFA chapter is being represented at the State Fair FFA livestock judging contest, Thursday, August 31, by three local members. Boys participating on the judging team are Bruce Jeremiason, Jim Downing and Curtis Eischens. Wayne Skaar will participate in showmanship. Members who will be showing livestock in the largest FFA livestock show in the nation are Mike Moorse with Jersey dairy cattle and Joe Fier with Chester White swine.

Firemen called for tractor blaze

Firemen were called to the Lawrence Stelter farm, about 10 miles south of Minneota, at noon last Saturday when sparks from a tractor ignited gasoline which had spilled on the ground and this blaze started the tractor burning. The tractor was in the granary at the time, but Stelter and his father managed to roll it out of the building and had the fire almost out by the time the fire fighters from Minneota arrived on the scene.

25 Years Ago-Aug. 26, 1992

“It’s gotta get worse before it gets better”

Demolition of the swimming pool began last week when workers began removing cement from the old pool. Scoepp Construction of Maynard received the demolition bid. Wanzek Construction of Fargo, ND., was awarded the bid for construction of the new pool when bids were opened August 6. Completion date is set for June 1, 1993.

Getting a facelift

Ufkin’s Furniture and Appliance here in Minneota got an entirely new look when the front of their store was remodeled this past week. Bruce Kack applied the new siding while Glenn and Patti Jeremiason applied the new lettering that announces the Ufkin “formal” logo.

Earn trophies for good play

Volleyball players earned two handsome trophies in the Marshall Park and Recreation action this summer. One trophy was for the “B” Squad Tourney - 2nd place and the other was for “B” Squad League Champs. The team consisted of Jami Rolbecki, Tessa Traen, Rhonda Verschelde, Donna Decrock, Angela Yost and Nicole Briley.

Ladies win The Silver Cup

The Minneota ladies captured “The Silver Cup” award after competing at the Granite Falls golf course last Wednesday. Golfing for the Minneota team were Elaine Buysse, Wendy Larson, Dorie Teigland, Rita VanDorpe, Sue Muhl, Jeanette Sharp, Beth Brewers and Lonna Stensrud.
