75 Years Ago-Sept. 4, 1942

Minneota Loses

Minneota batters’ inability to hit Sander’s pitches from the Hadley mound cost them a defeat by a score of 6-0 in the first of a three-game baseball honors Sunday. The game was played at Lake Wilson and will be followed by the second encounter on the Minneota diamond at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, September 6. The local boys are making no excuses, but the rumor is that Sanders of Hadley is slated for a try-out with the Washington Senators of the American League. Nevertheless, Minneota boys are determined to slap his fancy curves all over the home diamond next Sunday. That shutout HURT!

Boy hurt in fall

Orville Hennen, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Hennen was thrown from his Shetland pony and knocked unconscious on Saturday evening. The boy was found in the pasture about six or seven o’clock by his mother. The parents rushed him to Minneota, where he was examined and attempts were made to revive him. He remained unconscious till about midnight, but after coming to appeared to be unhurt otherwise.

People injured

A flat tire caused a tip over south of Porter Sunday evening, when Richard Lund of Minneota, the driver, turned sharply to keep the car from going into the ditch. Miss Ruth Boulton of Porter sustained a cracked clavicle and other passengers were cut and bruised. They were Miss Doris Fier and Leonard Amundson and Rodney and Bernice Fier of Taunton. The car belonging to Mrs. Minnie Westdahl was damaged considerably, although not beyond repair.

Leaves for Army

Virgil Ufkin, proprietor of the local Gamble store, left Monday to be inducted at Fort Snelling. During his absence, Mrs. Ufkin will continue to operate the store. She came to Minneota as a bride a year ago last summer, shortly after her husband purchased the business from Walter Froegel.

50 Years Ago-Sept. 7, 1967

Gala Homecoming planned for Princess Kay

Carla Rae Larson, Princess Kay of the Milky Way XIV, will be welcomed home with all the pomp and ceremony of a visiting dignitary when she arrives here Friday afternoon and her hometown will do its best to see that the “princess” is royally received and fittingly entertained. A presentation ceremony will be held at the corner of Jefferson and Second during which the key to the city will be presented to her by Mayor L. A. Dero, a gift will be presented by the Silver Spur Saddle club, State Senator J. A. Josefson and Cliff Markuson of the Minneota Dairy Association will speak.

Youths damage farm property

Youths from this and the Taunton communities damaged buildings on a farm operated by Camiel Coquyt, eight miles south of Minneota Sunday afternoon, breaking windows in a barn and house. Open house An open house reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. John Bernardy on their 50th wedding anniversary will be held at Hope Lutheran church parlors on Sunday, September 17.

Minneota Manor names royalty

The Minneota Manor residents selected Rachael DeMartelaere and Harold Kile as their representative Queen and King for Minneota’s Boxelder Bug Days celebration. Minneota Manor places second at Senior Olympics The Minneota Manor was one of six area nursing homes to participate in the Senior Olympics in Renville in late August. This year, the team from Minneota took second place. Those who participated were Ida Blake, Marie Boncquet, Adeline Budner, Anna Dalle, Edgar Gautefall, Sylvia Madoll, Theresa Gits and Emil VanHee. Staff members accompanied the residents and they were all assisted by members of the Minneota Jaycees, of which the Manor was very thankful.

20th Anniversary of the Minneota Manor

This is the 20th Anniversary of the Minneota manor health Care Center, and the staff and residents invite you to come and celebrate with them. A special evening of food, fellowship and entertainment is planned for tonight (Wednesday) beginning at 6 p.m. And, weather permitting, all of the festivities will take place in the beautiful courtyard of the Manor.
