75 Years Ago-Oct. 23, 1942

Buried Saturday

Mrs. Ragnild Rye of Mankato, a resident of Minneota for nearly half a century, died October 14 from old age and heart ailments after a week’s illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O. H. Anderson in Mankato. She was 88 years of age.

Oscar Thomas dies

Oscar Henry Thomas, who only two months ago retired as section foreman of the Chicago and Northwestern died on Sunday morning, October 18 of a heart attack. He had been ill only a few hours and passed away at his home at the age of 66 years.

Receives commission

Vladimar Bjornson left Minneapolis Sunday for Washington, for active duty in the navy. He will receive a commission of Lieutenant, junior grade, before indoctrination training at an Eastern base. Bjornson, a former Mascot editor and newspaper man and radio commentator in the Twin Cities for seven years, was offered an army commission for services in Iceland last spring, but failed to qualify through a physical rejection. After a hernia operation, his navy application was given final approval last week. The vice consulship for Iceland locally, to which he was appointed recently, will be handled by his father, Gunnar B. Bjornson, chairman of the state board of tax appeals.

50 Years Ago-Oct. 26, 1967

Winners presented awards

Four winners in the recent junior golf tourney at Countryside Golf club were awarded trophies at the meeting of the Minneota Businessmen’s association last week. Bob Canton and Doug Dero, were winners in the championship flight, first and second, respectively, and Steve Koppien and Bill Merritt, were the two winners in the first flight. Livestock trophy winners Kevin Hansen of the Hope 4-H club received a plaque from the Minnesota Valley Breeders association, sponsors of the champion dairy exhibit at the Lincoln County Fair. Joe Fier of the Marble-Alta Vista club received a trophy for his achievement and growth in livestock projects and a livestock enterprise. He also received a trophy and ribbon for champion swine showmanship honors in the 4-H division at the Minnesota State Fair.

Boy, 11, killed, two injured in tractor mishaps

A series of tractor accidents resulted in the death of one and injury to two others, this past week. Thomas Kack, age 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Kack, who live four miles east of Canby, was fatally injured on Friday, October 20 about 5 p.m. when the tractor he was driving tipped. He was hauling corn in from the field and had just unloaded and was starting to go back to the field, when the front wheels on the tractor broke, causing the tractor to tip, pinning him underneath. His chest was crushed and he was killed instantly. Arnold Neyens broke his left hand and lost two fingers and the tip of his thumb on Thursday while he was combining corn at the David Josephson farm. Mr. Neyens had stopped to clean out a fan on the combine and in getting up from the ground caught his hand in the speed belt, crushing and breaking the hand and severing the fingers and the thumb. Darrell Hovland, who lives five miles northeast of Minneota, had his left wrist broken and had broken blood vessels on Wednesday morning when a tractor he was cranking back-fired.

1992 Homecoming Royalty

Coronation for the 1992 Homecoming festivities was held Monday afternoon at the high school. Named to honors were the following: King Charles Vlaminck, Queen Denise Hennen, Princess Jenny Kloos, Prince Jayme Sussner and crownbearers Matthew DeVos and Jamie Thooft.

Local poet published in Anthology

Deborah Mead of Taunton has just had original poetry published in “Best Poems of the 90’s”, a treasury of today’s poetry compiled by The National Library of Poetry. The poem is entitled Nature’s Heaven, and the main subject is nature. Going to the Dome Nathan Opdahl, son of Jay and Jackie Opdahl of this community, will be going to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on November 22 as a participant in the Gatorade/NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition. He placed first at the Sectional event at Mankato on October 17th. Nathan will be competing during the halftime of the Vikings vs. the Browns game on Sunday, November 22. The Minneota Jaycees conducted the local competition.
