75 Years Ago-Dec. 4, 1942

Home from island

Bjorn Hofteig and Orvin Sigurdson returned home in time for the Thanksgiving Day holiday, after over a year at Santa Lucia, one of the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. They were employed on a construction project on this island, which is one of the Brittish bases “rented” to the United States for defence purposes in exchange for fifty over-aged destroyers in 1940. Their boss was Rudy Amundson, son of the late Gregar Amundson of Minneota.

Brothers meet

Last week Mr. and Mrs. George Prellwitz of Taunton received a letter from their son, Private Harold Prellwitz saying, “Yesterday when I was in the mess hall doing nothing, the sergeant came in and asked if Prellwitz was around anywhere. I answered and look up and here was Cleon standing right beside me.” Both boys had been in the service for several months, and were separated, so they thought, by several hundred miles. Harold was in New York and his brother, Cleon, was in Florida.

Announce 4-H National Honors

Five Victory Gardeners, a canner and a clothing member of the Lyon county 4-H clubs won national gold medals for excellence of their work in 1942, announces County Agent F. J. Meade. They were Genevieve Van Overbeke (now Mrs. Louis Green) with canning; Elizabeth Regnier of Taunton with clothing; Garfield Hoversten of Lynd, Dorothy Van Overbeke of Minneota, Harold Parcells of Balaton, Richard Buesing of Tyler and Eugene Trout of Amiret, All 4-H Gardeners.

50 Years Ago-Dec. 7, 1967

Steve Boerboom is new sports editor

Steve Boerboom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Boerboom of Ghent, is the new sports writer at The Mascot, handling athletic events at the Minneota high school. A senior in high school, Boerboom’s first articles appear in this issue.

Santa Lucia candidates

Sharon Lein, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Lein, Cathy Josephson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Josephson, and Lois, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Josefson, are candidates for the queen of the Santa Lucia Festival to be held at St. Paul’s church this next Sunday evening. As part of the program, Danish folk dancers will perform in costume. Mrs. Lester R. Christianson will sing a medley of Scandinavian Christmas carols and Mrs. Gary Buysse will sing the Santa Lucia song during the festivities. At the conclusion, the Luther Leaguers will serve an Icelandic smorgasbord.

Hay bales destroyed by fire

The Minneota Fire Department answered a call to the Hubert Hoff farm 10 miles northeast of Minneota on Friday morning at 6:30, when bales of hay stored in a shed caught fire. There were 700 bales of hay stored in a metal pole hay shed and it was reported that the fire started from an electric fence that was near.

Golfing in December

Walter Buysse and Don Bourgeois, were two of two dozen golfers who took advantage of last Sunday’s summer-like temperatures to keep their “pasture” game in shape. Two of the 24, Keith Krommenhoek and John Homme, used a snowmobile as a golf cart and quickly zipped around the course.

25 Years Ago-Dec. 2, 1992

Academic award winners These students were given awards through President Bush’s ACADEMIC Fitness program. The students are all sophomores, and their awards were based on academic progress through their freshman years. They are: Arra Ross, Ryan Swedzinski, Jonathon VanMoorlehem, Laura Engels, Kim Tillemans, Jessica Nuytten, Laura DeSmet, Kristy Buysse, Elaine Telste, Donna Decrock, Nicole Briley, Tesa Traen, Carissa Boerboom, Angela Yost, and Jami Rolbiecki.

Birth announcement

Lyall and Jean Gislason are the proud parents of a baby girl, Natasha Miranda, born Nov. 15 weighing 7 lbs. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Moorse, Grace Hoy and George Gislason and her great-grandmother is Lucy Moorse.

Minneota man killed

A Minneota man was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car accident late Friday night at the intersection of Highway 59 and Lyon County Road 10, according to a State highway Patrol report. Harold David Hatletvedt, 26, was killed when the 1985 Ford pickup he was driving collided with a 1977 Pontiac driven by William John Dirckx, 51, of Clarkfield.
