75 Years Ago-Jan. 29, 1943

1,500 Minnesota WAACs by Mar. 31

A drive to enroll 1,500 Minnesota women in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps by March 31 is now under way, and Mrs. Thos. Reinertson has volunteered to assist the state recruiting staff by handling inquiries regarding that service, at the Minneota Mascot office. Women between the ages of 21 and 44, who are citizens of the United States and have no dependents, are urged to interest themselves in the possibilities of service connected with the WAAC.

First local girl to wear WAVES colors

Vivian M. Lund, R/M, 2/C, daughter of Mrs. Hannah Lund, graduated from her indoctrination course at the U.S. Naval Training Station for the Womens Reserve at Iowa State College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was the first Minneotan to enlist in the WAVES (Womens Accepted Voluntary Emergency Service).

Water mains shut off at midnight

The village council warns users of water that the mains will be shut off at midnight (Thursday) and will remain closed for about four hours. Householders who have left taps running open to avoid frost are asked to check up and turn them off, as an unusual amount of water has been used during the cold spell.

50 Years Ago-Feb. 1, 1968

Superior rating

Minneota’s entry in the District Nine One-Act Play contest held in the local high school auditorium last Tuesday scored a superior rating and was listed as alternate to the regional contest. Minneota presented the farce-comedy “The Happy Journey from Trenton to Camden” by Thornton Wilder. Cast members included Eric Heggeseth, Lois Josefson, Marc Christianson, Debbie Dero, Cheri Traen and Bruce Jeremiason.

Prize winner

Earl Buysse, who lives near Ghent, was the winner of the tractor safety roll bar which was given away by Geiwitz & Co, during their John Deere Day last week. He put the safety equipment on his machine in the implement firm’s shop last Friday and before he left for home was wished good luck by Curt Anderson, the firm’s salesman.

Willing worker and ‘Good Neighbor’

Mrs. Cora Amundson, who lives on Jefferson street in south Minneota, received publicity last Wednesday when she was selected as the Minneapolis radio station’s “Good Neighbor” but she was received considerably more earlier in the month when she was featured in an article in “Red Cross Volunteer” a publication published by the St. Paul Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

25 Years Ago-Jan. 27, 1993

New Postmaster installed

Tuesday Wayne West is being congratulated by Minneota’s past Postmaster, Bruce Londgren. Wayne comes to Minneota from Minneapolis, where he has been employed by the Postal Service for the past twenty two years. He graduated from the Canby high school in 1969, so he is familiar with the area. Mr. Londgren will be named the Postmaster at Black Duck, MN.

Manor sponsors bowling tournament

The Minneota Manor was the scene of the annual bowling tournament this past week. Five teams of bowlers competed for trophies, with sponsors from various departments of the facility backing them. This was a two-day bowling tournament. The five teams competed on Tuesday and the two top teams then bowled again on Thursday to declare a champion team.

Daddy Date Night

The blindfold draw contest proved challenging for Greg Downing and his daughter Kayla, as they competed in one of the games played by local Girl Scouts and their escorts on Daddy Date Night on Tuesday evening at the American Legion Hall.

Bank officer retires on Friday

Delores Seifert, Personal Loan Banking Officer at Community First National Bank, in Minneota, will retire from that position as of this Friday, January 29. Delores has been with the local bank for the past 23 years.
