75 Years Ago-Feb. 26, 1943

First carload of tin cans from Southwest Minnesota

Southwestern Minnesota will be shipping a train car loaded with tin cans to Chicago to a detinning plant. The car was loaded at Marshall with 40,000 pounds of cans, collected from grocery stores throughout the county by the Hamm Brewing company and Coca Cola company trucks. From Minneota alone, the Hamm trucks picked up a total of 900 pounds. There is 12,000 pounds to spare toward a second car, which it is hoped can be shipped on March 13.

Local woman fractures hip in fall on ice

Mrs. Annie Hanson of Minneota fractured her right hip in a fall on the ice in front of her home on Saturday. She is confined to bed and will be cared for by her niece, Mrs. B. E. Cole.

Rationing reminders

The northwest this week gets its first taste of wid-spread food rationing. Sale of some 200 commodities of commercially processed foods was stopped Saturday and won’t be available again until on March 1, when they will be sold only on surrender of point coupons.

50 Years Ago-Feb. 29, 1968

50 years ago last Friday

Just half a century had elapsed last Friday, Feb. 23, since a group of 23 draftees, left their home in the community and answered the call of their country, embarking on a journey that for some of them would end in Army camps in the United States but for others would end in the thick of World War I battle in Europe. The Mascot of March 1, 1918 had a picture taken before they let in front of what was then known as the “City Hall”.

Vikings play Monday in District

Minneota’s Vikings will play in the first round of the district tournament, taking on the winner of Bracket I of the sub-district in a game which is to be played at Cottonwood Monday evening. The Minneota Vikings are seeded fourth with a record of 14-4.

Wrestle in Region meet

Three Minneota high school boys wrestled in the region meet in New Ulm last Saturday. They are: Robert DePestel, Bill Merritt and Edward Lozinski.

Teigland named to WCCO Team of the Week

High scoring Jerry Teigland of the Vikings was named last Friday to WCCO radio’s all-state basketball team of the week.

25 Years Ago-Feb. 24, 1993

Tournaments begin for local teams

The year-end tournaments are at hand for our sporting teams at the local high school. On Tuesday, the wrestlers competed in the Section 3-A Team Tournament in Slayton. Individual Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27, for eight of the team members who qualified. On Thursday, February 25, girl’s basketball action will begin with two tournament games. The boys basketball tournament action will start Saturday, March 6.

Time on School Board appreciated

Local School Board Chairman Jim Rokeh presented Becky Esping with a plaque of appreciation for her seven years of service on the School Board. Esping recently resigned from the board citing “personal reasons” for her resignation. Esping served as Chairman and Clerk on the Board.

Students earn prestigious awards

Karin Anderson and Ryan Buysse were awarded the Triple “A” Award at the Minneota High School for their successful activities centering in Academics, Arts, and Athletics. Their names are now submitted into the regional competition for the top qualifiers for this award. State Representative Jim Girard meets Minneota student,

Laura Eischens

Laura Eischens, a junior at Minneota high school, spent the week of February 8-12 at the State Capitol in St. Paul and served as a High School Page for the Minnesota House of Representatives. Laura also met with her legislator, State Representative Jim Girard, from District 21A.
