75 Years Ago-July 23, 1943

Thye called to mass meeting

Governor Ed Thye came to Marshall Wednesday afternoon in response to an invitation from a group of citizens of that city, who called a mass meeting to discuss the storm situation and consider relief action. Over fifty farmers, insurance men bankers, county officials and other businessmen were present.

160 square miles in Lyon County total loss

Three million dollars crop losses are estimated as the toll of a violent wind, hail, and rain storm that swept across this section Sunday afternoon, leaving a trail of ruined fields on the eve of harvest. The worst damage was done in a strip from three to seven miles wide, starting in northern Lincoln county and running across the center of Lyon county to Cottonwood and Murray.

50 Years Ago-July 25, 1968

Summer Reading Program

Darren Gislason, the instructor, said “More than 70 junior high school students who attended the Experimental Summer Reading Program held at the public school during the last six weeks.” This program was designed to broaden and deepen skills in reading comprehension and speed, mathematics, and English grammar. A total of 76 students enrolled: this was more than twice the highest number expected. Over 90% of these remained enrolled throughout the six weeks.

To serve on Youth Ministry Commission

Lois Josefson, daughter of State Senator and Mrs. Joe Josefson has been elected by the Lutheran Church in America executive council to serve for a two-year term on the LCA youth ministry commission, which is composed of 10 youths and 10 adults from various parts of the U.S. The commission meets twice a year in Philadelphia.

Stenerson-Boerboom

Betty Boerboom of Minneapolis became the bride of Robert Stenerson, also of Minneapolis, in the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Marshall. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Boerboom of Marshall and the groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stenerson of Minneota.

Daughters Engaged

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Guza announce the engagements of their daughters, Barbara Ann to Robert E. DeBaere and Sylvia Ann to Francis C. DeBaere sons to Mr. and Mrs. Louis DeBaere of Marshall. A double wedding is being planned for September 28.

Minneota Jaycees respond to flood victims

The Minneota Jaycees are asking the people of the Minneota, Ghent and Taunton areas to donate items to help those who have been stricken by the recent flooding.

Class of 1973 gathers

The Minneota High School Class of 1973 held their 20-year reunion June 19th at the Minneota American Legion.
