75 Years Ago-November 5, 1943

Died in crash

Memorial services for Staff Sergeant John L. Guttormsson, who was killed in the Latin-American area will be held next Sunday, November 7, at St. Paul’s Lutheran church. He is survived by his wife and parents, Rev. and Mrs. G. Guttormsson, four sisters and two brothers.

Dhaese-Tholen

Miss Marie Dhaese, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Goodman of Minneota, became the bride of Andrew Tholen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Hubert Tholen of Marshall at St. Anne’s Church at East Moline, recently.

John O. Huso, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Huso, was promoted to the position of cashier of the State Bank of Storden.

School to observe Education Week

Next week the schools throughout the nation will observe the 23rd annual observance of American Education Week. The general theme is “Education for Victory” with each day of the week emphasizing a certain phase. Special observances will be made in the local high school during activity periods each afternoon of next week. This period extends from 2:20 to 2:50 p.m. The Student Council will have charge of the program.

50 Years Ago-November 7, 1968

Musical here

Friday, Saturday Students from the entire high school are involved in the musical “The King and I”, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hamerstein II, which is to be presented Friday and Saturday evenings under the direction of Miss Shirley Wohlhueter. A portion of the cast, which numbers about seventy, includes Bill Pennings, Carolyn Rye, Francis DeCock, Larry Langsweirdt, Michele Claeys, Kathy Boncquet and Ron Amundson.

Named delegate to Brazil church meet

Lois Josefson, daughter of State Senator and Mrs. J. A. Josefson, has received a letter informing her that she has been selected to serve as a delegate to the fifth assembly of the Lutheran World Federation to be held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in July of 1970. The Lutheran Church of America gets 14 delegates, two of which are youths between the ages of 18 and 25.

Silver wedding

Mr. and Mrs. John E. Josephson observed their silver wedding anniversary at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Minneota on Sunday afternoon.

Lootens-DeSmet

Patricia Lootens of Porter and Harold DeSmet of Minneota were united in marriage on Saturday, September 7 at 2 p.m. at St. Edward’s Catholic church in Minneota. The parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. August Lootens of Porter and the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Edward DeSmet of Minneota.

Two men file for village office

Byron Rafnson, clerk, and Harold Schwartz, councilman, filed Wednesday morning for re-election to those offices in the coming village election.

25 Years Ago-November 3, 1993

State Cross Country meet

Nicole Anderson will take a trip to the State Cross Country meet next week with the C/M team. An eighth grader, Anderson has progressed very quickly into a bright spot for the future of cross country in our area. The C/M team took first at Sections, with Anderson finishing 19th out of the field of 98 runners. She is the daughter of Kevin and Jamie Anderson of rural Taunton.

Birth Announcement

Bruce and Carey Lessman of Ghent are proud to announce the birth of their son, Alex Scott, on October 26, 1993. Alex weighed 8 lbs. 15 1/2 oz. and was 21” at birth.

Confirmation held at St. Paul’s

St. Paul’s Lutheran church was the scene of the Confirmation of five of its young people on Sunday, October 31st. They are Davon Larson, Lisa Hasert, Beth Sarazyn, Naree Hasert, and Tim Landgraff.
