75 Years Ago-January 7, 1944
Taunton farmer knows country at Polish Border
Stanley Mular, who farms in the Taunton locality, knows what the country is like where the Russians broke through on the old Polish border. He lived there at one time. Mular, in speaking of the farming country along the border, said it was the finest farm land in Europe. Crops are much like those raised here he said. Wheat and rye are the big crops. “In fact anything we planted there grew,” he said.
50th wedding anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Balle, former Island Lake residents, now living on Whitney street, Marshall, will hold open house for their friends and relatives on Sunday afternoon and evening, January 9, to commemorate their golden wedding anniversary.
Mascot has new writer
Miss Donna Norem is the new Mascot correspondent in Swede Prairie, succeeding Miss Jennell Komplelien, who resigned that position last week.

50 Years Ago-January 9, 1969
Doing their good turn
Members of the Boy Scout troop of Minneota were busy as beavers the latter part of last week doing their bit for community betterment by uncovering hydrants which were covered by snows of recent weeks. Kurt Pesch and Ken Amundson are pictured shoveling snow away from a “plug” near the school bus garage.
90 years old
Ernest Kern, who with his wife has been a resident of this village since the autumn of 1958, observed his 90th birthday anniversary last Thursday, January 2. Minneota firemen called out twice Minneota’s fire fighters were called out twice this past week-once to the Frank Debbaut home at Taunton, on December 31, and once at the Jerry Baugher home in Minneota, on January 2. Both the Minneota and Taunton departments were called for the Debbaut fire, which partially destroyed an attached garage and which started from an electric heating element. The fire at the Baugher residence burned the kitchen curtains and was started by wax melting on a stove.

New staff member at Minneota High School
Susan Hammer is not new to our community, but she is a new staff member at Minneota High School. She began duties as Dean of Student Affairs/School Social Worker on January 3rd. With only one day of work behind her, she was still a little uncertain as to what her case load would be.

The following students at Minneota High School have been selected by their peers to vie for the Sno-Ball King and Queen coronation. Seniors: Julie Schwartz, Nicole Coequyt, Rick Myhre, Chad Lozinski. Juniors: Rhonda Verschelde, Jami Rolbiecki, Duane Kockelman and Bjorn Hunt. Freshmen: Jenny Schwartz, Kim Fier, Paul Nuytten and Luke Ahlschlager. Sophomores: Justina DeSmet, Janice Myhre, Mark Myrvik and Bruce Laleman.
Birth Announcement
Kevin and Renae Guttormsson of Minneota wish to announce the birth of their second child, Dillon Jon, who was born on December 21.
