Stassen nets 1,000th point of her career on Saturday

Ireland Stassen became the 12th player in Minneota girls’ basketball history to score the 1,000th point of her career Saturday afternoon in the Section 3A-North opener against Canby.
The multi-faceted 5-8 senior forward led the Vikings to a 49-38 victory over Canby.
Stassen, needing 21 points entering the game to reach the milestone, scored 22 points in that game.
“I’m glad it’s over with,” admitted Stassen, who is averaging 15.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game this season. “People have been talking about it the past few games and I’m just glad to get it over with and we can concentrate on the playoffs.”
Despite often going up against taller players, Stassen has amassed 14 double-doubles in 27 games this season by utilizing her aggressive nature, a quick first step and excellent leaping ability.
“She is the heart and soul of this team,” said Minneota coach Al Panka. “She is our leader out there and the person everyone looks to.”
Stassen scored 15 points in the first half to help the Vikings take a 29-18 lead, and then reach the milestone on a layup with 8:02 remaining in the game. “I was hoping to get it with a three-pointer,” Stassen said with a laugh, when asked how she envisioned the final basket to reach the milestone. “I had a couple of chances but it didn’t go in. I’m just glad I got it done.”
After the game, Stassen was presented with an impressive banner marking the achievement that was made by Brian Jeremiason, as well as the game ball.
“Having supportive teammates who push each other to do better is invaluable,” Stassen said. “None of us would be able to what we have done without each other. Being able to lift each other up and celebrate each other’s personal and team goals is exciting and rewarding.”
