Mrs. Karen Dalager’s Kindergarten Class "How to Prepare a Turkey for Thanksgiving"

“My dad is going to shoot the turkey. I am NOT going with him. He will bring it home. I will need to give the turkey a bath to get it clean and then cut the feathers off. Once that is done, I will need to cook the turkey in the oven for 100 minutes. The oven should be 30 degrees. I will know the turkey is done when the oven rings. That means it is ready to eat. We will also eat pumpkin seeds with the turkey. When we are done, I will go play. Mom and dad will clean up the supper.” - Arya Sonnenburg

“To get a turkey I will go with my grandma to Walmart. The turkeys are on the middle shelf of the store. My grandma will need to pay for it and we will take it back home. At home, we need to get the turkey ready by taking the plastic off. Then it goes into the HOT oven to cook for 6 minutes at 5 degrees. I will take it out of the oven with a fork because it is very hot. Then I need to take the pan out of the oven. Now it is ready to eat with my family. After we are done, everyone helps clean up and we put the extras into the fridge for later.” - Averi Hennen

“I will see a turkey in the forest. I will bring some apples, cut the apples up and make them into applesauce. Then I will make a trap around the forest and put the applesauce as the bait in the middle of the trap. When the trap falls on the turkey, I will grab the turkey by flipping the trap over and grabbing the turkey’s neck. I will take the turkey home and get him ready to cook. I need to cut him with a knife. He will cook for 20 minutes at 40 degrees. When the oven beeps, I will take the turkey out with the hand glove things so I don’t burn my hands. I am going to get forks and spoons. I will need green apples to make more applesauce. We each get one bowl of apples sauce with our turkey. We will also have chips with our meal.” - Cale Bitker

“I am going to make turkey and stuffing for Thanksgiving dinner. We already have some turkeys at our house. My mom or dad will have to catch one of them. My dad can run fast even though he has a bad foot. My mom can run fast too. Wait, my dad’s friend is super fast, he will be able to catch the turkey. My sister will peck the feathers off the turkey or I might help. It will need to be cut...you know the feet and head need to come off. I will cook it in the oven on a tray. It will be in a hot oven but not too hot oven for one day. I think about 1 degree is the right temperature. I will know it will be done when it is flat and the bones are sticking out. I will cut it again so we can eat it. Mom will make the stuffing. After eating, I can wash my hands and call friends to see if I spend the night at their house.” - Alexandra Emery

“We already have a turkey from...I don’t know where mom got it. I think it is from the Chicken Connection. It is in the freezer downstairs. I will ask mom how to get it ready for the oven. It needs to go in the oven for 11 minutes. The oven has to be really hot….like 10 degrees. The oven will beep, that means the turkey is done. I will cut it up with a sharp knife. We will eat potato with butter on it. When done, put our plates in the dishwasher. Put the bones in the garbage or give them to the dogs. Then, that’s it.” -Bryson Javers

“I will hunt for the turkey in a deer stand. Then I can see better when up high. I will use a snipper from the high ground to see the deer. I will skin it so I can get the meat. I will take it back to the house. It will cook in the oven in a pan for 30 minutes at 20 degrees. I will check the oven but the oven will tell me if it is done. Then I will bring it to the table by carrying the pan. My dad will bring chicken nuggets and corn to eat with the turkey. I will buy banana bread from Starbucks. Now we are ready to eat. When we are done, we dump our plates in the garbage. Dad cleans everything up and I will help.” -Jace Bitker

“I will get it at a store called Walmart. I will drive the car and go into the store. Go to the freezer part. The turkeys are cooked. I will use my eyes to look and find a turkey. It is brown. I will grab it with my hand and go check out...that means buy the turkey. Take the turkey to the car and drive back home. Get out of the car with the turkey and bring it into the house. Put it on a plate. Cook it in the oven, then it is ready. It needs to stay in the oven for 6 mins. Make sure the oven is kinda hot. Leave the turkey on the plate and take it out of the oven. Put it on the table - you can eat it.” -Cassidy Sandhurst

“Shoot it! I will get a gun from my house. The turkey will be right outside my door in my yard. Put the gun away and bring the turkey in the house. Chop the turkey, all of it into little pieces. Do that part in the garage. You need to cut the head, legs, and feathers off. Now cook it on the stove. You will need a flat pan. Cook it for 10 minutes. The stove will ding when it is done. Put the turkey on a plate and then we eat it sitting at the table. Put some salt and pepper on it. Throw the plates away. Go play!” -Kamryn Runia

“I will catch a turkey with a gun. You can find turkeys by the trees...not by me, but in the country. Take him home to eat. Put him in the house to bake him. Use a knife to cut the feathers off. Shove it in the oven. Bake him for 3 minutes at 50 degrees. Set a timer. Take him out of the oven. It isn’t hot so grab with a fork and eat him. Everyone brings a fork standing by the oven. Now we have Ice Cream for dessert. We have to go to the grocery store to get it. We will eat it at home with a spoon. Then we will make popcorn and watch a movie.” - Kaelyn Mortenson

“Get a pan from the cupboard...wait..turkey goes in the fridge. Before that, go to the turkey store. But I don’t know where we have one at - not by us. Maybe the grocery store like Brad’s has turkey. I have money to buy the turkey. I will drive there in dad’s truck. I can reach the pedals. Put the turkey in the front passenger seat. I will drive back home. Now I will cook it in the pan with oil and soil. Shake it around in the kitchen. Cook on the stove. The timer tells me it is done. Now I eat it. That’s all.” -Tate Koons

“Ask someone politely to go get me a turkey if they are a grown up. We need to look near the woods where the deer are. That might be where the turkeys are at. We could use a hunting chair, like one of those big tall ones. We could get down and shoot it. My friend Kaite will shoot the turkey. Usually when my mom gets a chicken it has something on it …(points to her ankle) Maybe that is would have that too? Well, that is what we would do. Then take it to my house, bake it, put in the oven and put it on the plate. I would ask lots of people if they would like to have Thanksgiving dinner with me. We will have turkey, mashed potatoes, and lettuce. Guess what...my birthday is on Thanksgiving!. I can’t think anymore. I am done.” -Kylin Anderson

“Hmmm. From a store, get the turkey from the store. I don’t know what store has turkey. I would try Walmart. I will bring it home. We will put it in the oven. Leave it in the package. The oven needs to be 12 degrees for 10 minutes. When it is done, put it on a plate and eat it right there. Put the plate in the sink. I don’t know what next..go play?” -Nolan Citterman

“I need to feel the turkey and then get the plates. I will get the turkey from the store. We don’t eat turkey much. We usually eat it for Christmas. My friend comes over. I get out my tiny table. My mom brings turkey into my tent and I get to eat with my friend. She brought me a tiny fridge last year. So I have my own room now too. And that is that. The end.” -Jade Leflore

“I will get the turkey from the grocery store in Marshall. You know that one. Go to the food aisle. Get the stuffing. The turkey is in the food aisle. I don’t know if they will have it for Thanksgiving or not. If not, go to different store like Hy-Vee. Hy-Vee always ahs turkey. It is in any food aisle. We pay for it. My mom pays because she is the only one who goes to the grocery store. I don’t know. I will drive it home and put it in the oven. Then let it cool down. Probably we will carve it. Then you eat it. Throw the bones away and throw the plates away. And we are done.” -Jacob Myrvik

“Get a turkey from a farm. There are Thanksgiving farms you know. And then bring it home and chomp it with a knife. Put it in the microwave, turn it on for 9 minutes. Then take it out and eat it. When done eating it, you can eat some more and then done. And you can get another piece and be done. Go do something like play some games. Like play with your brother or both brothers. You can like play football or whoever catches it. And do a lot of stuff.” -Hyler Danielson

“Find a turkey in the forest. I don’t know what forest. You will know they are there when you see a feather. You try to get it like grabbing it with your hands. Put it on a big circle thing like a pan. Walk or drive home, then walk inside the house and put the turkey down on the big circle pan and you put it in the oven. Wait, cut the feathers off and then you eat the turkey part that you want to eat. Everybody in your family comes to your house and you eat the turkey. When it is gone, everyone goes home. Put the pan away and your done with it. And you go to bed. I think I might be done now.” -Chloe Breyfogle

“Get the turkey from the zoo by telling the zookeeper, ‘Can I have your turkey?’ Then I would bring it home. Then I would make it in the oven. First chop it up with a knife. Now put it in the oven for 50 minutes at 60 degrees. Then I would take it out with a glove so I don’t burn my fingers. I would eat it at the table. And nothing else. We are done.” -Lee Bottelberghe

Mrs. Lisa Hart’s Kindergarten Class

“I would go to Walmart and buy a turkey for $40. Then, I will carry it home and cook it at Mom or Dad’s house. I will put food coloring in the guts. Red. R-E-D. It will make it taste good. I will put it in a pan that’s really solid and big. And then I will cook it on top of the stove for 40 hours. I will look on the stove timer to see when it’s done and then I’ll use baking gloves to take it out. Um, then I’ll put the turkey on plates after I cut it with a very sharp knife. I’m going to’ make chicken and meat and cake. My whole family will eat it. Then I will go watch ‘Elliott the Reindeer’ movie on the couch. My mom will do the dishes because I just don’t like doing that.” -Elliot Anderson

“I will go to a barn and probably try to kill a turkey. I would have to cut off his head with a sword. Then I will wash it in the backyard with a hose. Actually, maybe I’d use a gun, not a sword. I will slice it into pork chops. I have to take it to Grandma Angie’s house to cook it in the stove. It will cook for 16 minutes. There is a timer and there’s a little square in the corner and you push it to when you want it to be done. I will take it back to my house. I will eat it with my mom and dad and whole family. I will make meat and cake too. When Thanksgiving is done we get ready for Christmas.” -Arlo Ascheman

“I would go to a store. The turkeys are dead there. I think they’re in the freezer. I’ll pay $100. I will go home and cook it in the oven on 81 high hot. I will hear the beep on the oven and then it’s done. I will use those hand things that are just like a mitten. I will buy those at the store too. I will split it up with a knife. A sharp knife. My mom can do that because I don’t want to cut my fingers off or my hand. My family will sit at the dining room table and eat it with strawberries and milk. When we’re done, we will dump the turkey bones in the garbage. We will do the dishes. After Thanksgiving, it’s winter.” -Colt Bouwman

“I would go to the turkey barn and buy one for $2. The turkey is already dead. You know, like the ones that don’t eat or drink. Or, I could get it from a hunter. I would take the turkey home and cook it on the stove in a pot. It cooks for 2 minutes. I’ll set the timer. I will cut it in half with a knife. I will get forks, and cups for drinking. Maybe we will have sandwiches and cupcakes for dessert. There are 2 leftover cupcakes from my dad’s birthday so I don’t need to make any. My mom, dad, Emma, and me will all eat it and then we will set up our Christmas stuff. That’s all I know.” –Max Buysse

“I probably go to Grandma and Grandpa Gossen’s. They live in the country. I think they probably have a turkey. In a barn, maybe? I think I’ll put turkey food in a basket and then the turkey will come to eat the food and then it will be caught. The turkey is alive, right? I think my dad would have to kill it with a knife. I’d be too scared to do this part. We’d put it in Dad’s truck and take it home. Then, I will wash it in our big laundry room sink. Then I will cook it in a pan in the oven for 30 hours until the timer beeps. Then I will take it out with cooking gloves on. You know, not the outside gloves- the ones the make it so you don’t burn your hands. Then I’ll move the turkey to a big plate and set it on the table. Then I will let it cool down and cut it up and give everyone in my family some. I’ll make corn and mashed potatoes and cranberries and probably apple pie for dessert. Everyone helps except Corbin and Eiley. Then we will play family games like Pop the Pig.” -Brynley DeSmet

“I’ll go hunting. I will walk around, walk around, walk around in the country. I’ve never seen a real turkey so I don’t know where they’re at. Not in the trees. In the grass. Long grass. So when I see one, I’ll shoot it with my BB gun. Chase Johnson gave in to me. The gun doesn’t have bullets. It has those circle things but it will kill it. So I’ll get a truck. I don’t have one, so I’ll get Kevin’s. No, the farm truck. I’ll put the turkey in the tailgate. You know, the back of the truck. I’ll take it home and wash it in the sink. Then I’ll put it in the oven for 2 hours. What’s a good temperature? How about 100. When it beeps, it’s done. Then you get the gloves and pull that thing out and put it on a plate. Everybody gets a plate. My dad will cut it up. We have the sharpest knives. I’d cut my finger. We’ll have ham and corn and chicken and apples. Do I have to keep talking? Now Thanksgiving is over and it’s December. The end.” -Drew Fier

“I would go to a turkey field. Then I would find a turkey and hunt it. I will take Dad’s gun. I mean I can’t take it, but Dad can. There will be long grass. The turkey will be hiding behind it. I would walk through there and my dad would shoot it. I am too young. Then we would go home with the turkey in the back of Dad’s truck. I will put the turkey in the oven or stove. It will be on a plate. I’m going to’ say about 2 minutes on hot temperature. There’s a beeper and when it goes off it’s done. We have those cooking gloves to wear to take it out. We will wait for it to cool down. I will cut it with a knife. But I’m still too little for that so I will have Mom or Dad cut it up. We will eat it with cranberries. I’ve never had cranberries but I think that’s a Thanksgiving food. And we will have oranges and mashed potatoes with sour cream on them. I love them. Then we will get our pajamas on and brush our teeth. Oh, the dishes. I’m not too little for that but Mom and Dad will wash those. When Thanksgiving is all done, we go to December.” -Whitney Gillund

“I will get a turkey from Hy-Vee. It is alive in the animal spot. I’ll put the turkey in a box and take it home in my mom’s car. When I get it home I will stab it in the neck. Wait, I can’t even use a sharp knife. I only can use butter knives. So, I guess my mom will have to kill it for me. Then we have to cut off the skin. I will put it in a pan in the oven for 10 seconds on 10 degrees. When it dings, my mom will take it out of the oven because it is HOT! I will cut pieces up. Then I will eat it with pizza and mac and cheese and that’s all. Me and Mom and Dad will eat it and Mom and Dad will clean up the dishes. I will watch T.V. It will be a good show like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.“ – Bensyn Gregoire

“I would shoot a turkey. I would have to go to any field to find one to shoot. They are hiding. I would walk through the corn field. I will have a gun with me. A BB gun – my BB gun. My Papa Mike gave it to me. I will shoot it and take it home. I need to call my dad and get his work truck. Wait, I don’t have a phone. If my mom takes off her password, I could use hers. OK, I’ll put the turkey in the back of the truck and my dad will drive me home. My dad will carry the turkey into the house because I never have shot any animal before. I will pull all of the feathers off, wash them and then use them for Thanksgiving decorations. Now I will put the turkey on a grill. I will cook it for like ummmm, like 3 minutes. I’ll watch the grill and then I will know when it’s done. Then I’ll put mittens on, take it off the grill, and cut it up. I will put it on plates with chicken legs and beans and peas and pineapple. My whole family will sit down to eat after we pray. Then me and my mom will wash all of the dishes. We will save the leftovers for supper. Actually, then we will go to bed.” –Norah Larson

“I would go to Wal-Mart and go where the food is. The turkeys are in cages. I think they are free because I want them to be free. I will take it home in my dad’s car. I will have to shoot it with my dad’s gun. Then I will put it in the oven for 2 minutes and when it makes a “beep” sound, I will have my dad take it out of the oven. I am too little to take it out because I’ll get burned. I’ll pull the feathers off and throw them in the garbage and let the turkey cool for a little bit. I will use a big knife and I won’t even get hurt when I cut it up. I will put it on plates and grab a spoon and a fork and sit down to eat it with chicken and corn. Nothing else. Then we will all clean up except for my sister Brenna because she does not like to clean.” -Brae Meyer

“I would go to the forest way far away and look for a turkey. Then I will take a net and throw the net on top of the turkey. I will put the turkey in my dad’s pick up and go home. Now, I will kill it with one of my dad’s guns. I don’t really want to do this because it is alive. But, I will do it. Then I will bring it in the house and put it in the oven and cook it for 10 minutes on hot. When the oven dings I will take it out with my hands and cut it in half with a knife. I will share it with my mom and dad and Madison and Parker. We will just have turkey because I don’t want to make any other foods. When we are done eating, we will wash our hands and go to bed. My mom will do all of the dishes when I am sleeping. That’s it!” -Mason Minnehan

“I would maybe find a turkey at a farm. Maybe Uncle Richard’s farm? My dad would have to come with me. I will bring a lasso and try to get a turkey with that. I will pull the string and then when it is caught I will put in the back of Uncle Richard’s car. He can drive the turkey to my house and I will ride with my dad. I will tell Uncle Richard to shoot it before he gets to my house. Then after he brings it in to my house, I will cook it. I will cut the head and eyeballs off first. I better let my dad do that because he says the knives are so sharp that I could cut my hands. I will watch. Then I will cook it in a pan on the oven. It cooks for 50 hours on steaming hot. We have white pads to put on my hands but they don’t really fit me because they are so big. I will put the turkey on a plate and then we will eat it with tater tots and French fries and probably some clear white eggs that we borrowed from my grandma. When we are done eating, we will play and my mom and dad will clean up the dishes and mess. I can help a little bit but I will need to take breaks.” –Madelyn Myhre

“OK – I think I would go into the woods. Where are the woods? I would have to go walking and when I find the woods, I’ll look for a turkey. Maybe the desert? I would have to shoot it with a gun, right? I will pick it up and carry it to my dad’s truck. My dad will drive me and the turkey to my house. Then I will have to fry it in the oven. I will put sprinkles on it first because sprinkles will make it look good. Then, I will cook it for 10 minutes on 15 temperature. Because when it beeps I will run to take it out of the oven. I’ll put those little glove things on that are in the drawer. Then I will take it out of the oven. I will cut it in half with a sharp knife. I can use a butter knife. I can use those kind. Then we will watch “The Turkey Waddle” on TV.” -Layla Opdahl

”I would go to a store, but I don’t know what store sells turkeys. Maybe I will just cook regular food instead. Or, I guess I could go hunting and shoot one with a gun. Quinn has a pellet gun that I could use. I have never shot it, but I think I could do it. I think turkeys are in tall grass. I’ll shoot it when I see one and I will pick it up and take it to my house. I’ll cut the feathers and skin off but not the ham. You know, the meat on the inside of the turkey? Then I will put it in the oven and set the timer for 10 minutes on 15 warm. The timer will beep and then I will put some gloves on – cooking gloves – and I’ll set it on the table. I will get a bonfire going. I will leave the feathers on. I will put the turkey on the grill for only about 6 minutes a then it will be done. I will know when it is done because it will look roasted or burned. I will use those pinchy things that we use for hot dogs to get the turkey off the grill so I don’t burn myself. I’ll take the turkey to my house. Then I will shoot a cow so we can have some ham too! Wait, I got a great idea! I could bring it to someone else’s house to eat it.
