Flamingo Road

Dale Verschelde, who won the Fourth Flight at the 55th annual Wynston Boe Golf Tournament at Countryside Golf Club on Sunday, was decked out in a flamingo shirt and the head covers in his golf bag were flamingos, as well. Verschelde explained that the late Paul Larson, the son-in-law of Wynston Boe and the husband of Wendy (Boe) Larson, liked flamingos and had placed them all over his yard and deck for decorations. Verschelde, a year older than Paul and Wendy's son, Jesse, who has won the tournament title 11 times, decided he was going to honor Paul and Wynston at the tournament four years ago and purchased flamingo head covers for his clubs. He also has a button with Wynston's photo attached to one of the head covers. This past Christmas, Verschelde's wife, Janelle, bought him a flamingo shirt to wear at this year's tournament. "She wouldn't let me wear it until today," laughed Verschelde. So, was it the shirt that brought him good luck in winning his flight? "Nah, she's my good luck charm," he said, pointing to Janelle seated in the golf cart.
