Following in his footsteps

Adam Josephson begins career as vet at father's clinic in Taunton

Adam Josephson grew up around his father's veterinary clinic in Taunton and returned recently to begin his career as a veterinarian after earning his degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
"I am extremely proud to have Adam join the practice," said his father, Scott Josephson, who has owned Tri-County Veterinary Clinic for the past 37 years. "To know that he has chosen to come here to join the profession and practice with me is very gratifying."
Adam graduated from Minneota High School in 2012. With his familiarity of veterinary science from watching and assisting his father as a young man, it only made sense that Adam should follow in his footsteps.
"I have been around the clinic since I was very young, mostly just riding around with him to various farm calls during the summer when I did not have school," Adam said. "I started actually helping out in some form when I was probably in junior high."
Adam was more than willing to help with anything related to veterinary work since he knew at a very young age that he wanted to become a veterinarian.
"I think I first told my mom (Roberta) that I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was in kindergarten or first grade," Adam noted. "I really just loved being around the clinic and all of the animals, but as I got older, I got to see the relationships that my dad has with his clients and really admired that."
After performing duties at a young age such as cleaning in the clinic, chute room and pens in the haul-in barn, Adam began learning the trade when he became a teenager.
"I was probably 13 or 14 when I started helping with basic technical work with small and large animal appointments or going with on emergency calls as an extra set of hands for him after business hours," Adam explained.
While attending college and veterinary school, Adam developed additional technical skills that he could utilize to assist with veterinary-related tasks when he came back home during breaks.
He first attended St. Cloud State University and spent five years there before graduating in 2017. He remained an additional year because he had redshirted for football. He majored in Biomedical Sciences and minored in Chemistry there.
Upon graduating from SCSU, Adam enrolled in veterinary school at the University of Minnesota where he spent four years.
"I decided in my third year to track food animal medicine to be able to take my prerequisite courses for some certain advanced cattle rotations," he told, "but also took plenty of rotations in small animal medicine and equine medicine to feel comfortable working with both large and small animals."
When Adam completed his courses and became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, the family didn't sit around the dinner table to discuss whether he would be coming to work for Tri-County Veterinary Clinic or not.
"I think through the years we have just kind of understood that I wanted to be back around Minneota when I was done with school and that working for and with my dad is a great opportunity for both of us," he remarked. "I don’t think my dad is ready to slow down anytime soon so we haven’t really talked specifics about what the long-term future holds, but I do want to follow him and be at Tri-County long-term. Being fresh out of school, I am just fortunate to be able to work with both him and Brady (Myers) and learn from both of them."
Scott purchased the veterinary clinic from Dr. A.W. Pennings 37 years ago and changed the name to Tri-County Veterinary Clinic to "represent a more regional presence for the practice".
Although retirement isn't in his plans yet, Scott feels a sense of relief in knowing that the clinic will be in good hands when that day comes.
"Dr. Brady Myers, who joined the practice four years ago, brought a level of skill in ruminant reproduction to our clinic," said Scott. "Now, with Adam here, who also brings a great skill set in veterinary medicine, it is professionally and personally very rewarding to know that the practice will continue with another generation of dedicated veterinarians, It is also a good feeling to bring two young professionals into our rural community."
Tri-County Veterinary Clinic now employs three full-time veterinarians, three full-time office and technical staff, and two or three part-time and temporary seasons staff members, including Scott's wife, Roberta, that help during the busiest and travel-heavy work schedules.
Adam has a strong interest and aptitude in bovine reproduction, which will allow him to work within the embryo transfer and reproductive services portion of the business. His responsibilities will include general large animal practice, as well.
"He is also a skilled small animal clinician, which will give us the opportunity to further develop and expand that area of our practice," Scott said.
Adam's first day on the job at Tri-County was June 1.
"It has been really busy since I have started, and I have really been enjoying it," Adam said. "I really like helping animals and working with people. I really think it is overlooked how much being a veterinarian involves working with people, but it is really important in my opinion to form good relationships with clients and having people know that you are doing your best for both their animals and them."
