Librarian recovering from broken hip

Minneota Librarian Mary Buysse returned home recently after breaking her hip in a fall in Sioux Falls recently and is looking forward to getting back to work at the library soon.

Buysse, who has been the head librarian at the Minneota Public Library for the past 35 years, was shopping with her husband Gary at Kohl’s in Sioux Falls on Nov. 19 when she fell.

“I was standing in line and I was the next person waiting to check out with the cashier,” Buysse explained.

“I’m not even sure how I fell. I don’t know if I just stepped wrong or I got my feet tangled in the cart, or exactly what happened.”

Buysse landed on her left hip and had to be taken by ambulance to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls. The personable Buysse underwent surgery at Avera and remained in the hospital until Nov. 24.

“It was a partial break so I was able to walk with help soon after it happened,” she said.

“I can walk now using a walker.” Buysse was transferred from Avera Hospital to the Minneota Manor to begin rehabilitation. She remained at the Manor for a week and returned to her home on Nov. 30.

“I’m glad to be home now,” she said. “I’m not in any pain anymore and I’m getting stronger every day.”

Buysse completed treatment for endometrial cancer recently and had been feeling much better. But now she is facing another adversity.

“It is what it is,” she said. “It could have been worse.” In Buysse’s absence, longtime assistant Elana Nomeland will take over as head librarian on an interim basis until Buysse is able to return.

Buysse has been in communication with those at the library and relays assignments that she has been compiling from home.

Buysse typically leads Story Time for the children on Saturdays at the library.

Ruth Bot will take over that duty this Saturday when Santa visits the library.
