| 'Friends of Bill Holm' raise funds, read in his honor |

By Byron Higgin Mascot Publisher ![]() A “Tribute to Minneota poet Bill Holm will include “Poems as Bill would have read them” and “Music Bill would have played.” Sponsored by Literary Witnesses, Milkweed Editions and Birchbark Books, the event is being held at 7 p.m., Monday, November 7 at Plymouth Congregational church in Minneapolis. Readers will include Minnesota Poel tLaureate Robert Bly, Holm’s wife Marcella Brekken, Publisher Emilie Buchwald and poets Phil Bryant, Phebe Hanson, Jim Heynen, Jim Lenfestey, Freya Manfred, Joe and Nancy Paddock and John Rezmerski. Sonja Thompson, assistant music director of Plymouth, will play selections of Bill’s beloved Haydn and other classics on piano and organ. It will include a performance of Holm’s poem, “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death.” There’s a free will offering with all proceeds going to The Friends of the Minneota Library. The Icelandic community is supporting the Bill Holm Memorial Fund at the Minneota Public Library. Holm was known as a voracious reader and used the library throughout his life. Improving the Minneota Public Library and preserving The Big Store are a means of paying tribute to Holm. A free broadside will be distributed to the first 400 attendees at the event.
