In 2006 Minneota won the state championship.
Just two members of that team are still playing today, Leah Fadness and Sam Hennen.
And in all that time, they haven’t changed their socks, despite the fact they are literally falling apart.
“We’re very superstitious,” laughed Hennen. “Oh, yes, I am,” added Fadness.
“Leah’s are actually worse than mine,” said Hennen about her socks.
“They’re falling apart but I put others over them and keep going,” Hennen said. “I wouldn’t think of changing them,” she added.
Fadness said being part of the 2006 championship was something special and changing their socks now, in the middle of a drive back to the state, would be, well, bad luck.
“They’re in bad shape, but I’m not going to change them,” Fadness laughed.
The one blue, one yellow socks don’t look as though they’d been through four seasons of wear and tear — but both them, and the gals who wear them, have seen it all.
Now, after successfully taking their 24-5 record to the sub-section finals with 3-0 wins over Wabasso and Lakeview, the two 2006 survivors want to lead their mates in the most important game of their careers.
Canby wrecked their Camden Conference hopes earlier and got the No. 1 seed. No. 2 Minneota wants revenge.
“Oh yes, we want to play Canby again,”
said Fadness. “We’ve been waiting for this one,” added Hennen.
The two rivals will hook up again at 6 p.m., Thursday, November 5 at SMSU in Marshall. And this time all the marbles are on the line. Fasten your stockings, girls!
