Sheriff unveils new jail

By Byron Higgin, Mascot Publisher

Over 3,000 people turned out to see the new Phase 1 of the Lyon County Jail in Marshall on Friday.

The facility which will eventually house up to 86 prisoners, will now hold 60 with the new addition.

The facility gives the Lyonn County Sheriff's Office more security and many safety features.

Currently there are about 45-50 prisoners housed in the current facility or sent to other facilities.

(Read more about the new jail in the coming issue of The Mascot on Wednesday, Sept. 2).

Skeleton guy rode into Minneota for the Memorial Run.

By Byron Higgin, Mascot Publisher

The Minneota Memorial Run on Saturday brought over 300 riders to the community. They made a powerful statement when they left for the afternoon run. (Left), two bikers paused behind Bubba’s Bar after the run. One of the events was the “Burnout,” as bikers tried to burn out a tire and “pop it.” The biker (top, right) did not succeed but made lots of smoke. Sam Drown of Marshall, a Minneota native, celebrated (right) amidst the smoke as he won the title.

Bikes were every where and here they lined Minneota’s Main Street on Hwy. 68.

Lots of food, including burgers, dogs and brats were serves up by C. J’s Bar and Grill. A long line waited for their food as servers were surrounded by smoke. The food was cooked up right on the spot.

Bug Days a blast after school starts
By Gayle VanVooren

School will start on September 8, and to celebrate — Boxelder Bug Days are the next weekend.
Kids of all ages will find something fun to do over the 25th anniversary of our town celebration.
There aren’t too many things that one has to plan ahead for - just show up and have a good time. And when the kids have fun, they remember, and want to return. That’s why there are so many good things for our youth to do.
Cody’s Carnival will be in town all three days, located near the Minneota Elevator. They will be bringing thrill rides for the littlest and biggest adventure seekers.
The little kids will have their own Parade  at 10:15 am, September 12, and here you can help the kids get a little “gussied up” for their friends. Every child will get a number of prizes, as the GMT Women of Today have worked very hard to finish this out. A red wagon, donated by State Farm Insurance, will be the top prize won that day by some lucky youngster.
Vogel’s exotic animals will be back to “ooh and aah” over, and kids are encouraged to take part in the kiddie run while older ones can get involved in the 5K run.
There will be a sawdust scramble for coins for certain age groups, and a pedal tractor pull  for area enthusiasts.
Kids can get involved in the bingo games, play some bean bag games, and enjoy the entertainment. They all will enjoy the fireworks show later on Saturday night.
Good food should also be a draw for our youth, and there will be plenty to choose from. The grand parade on Sunday will be a chance to fill a candy bucket, and then the Xtreme Bull Riding show will top off the weekend events.
Be watching for exact times of all these events, and get your kids ready for a great weekend when you bring them to Boxelder Bug Days here in Minneota.
