Mass of Christian Burial for Peter Janssen, 91, of Minneota, was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Novem-ber 29, 2008, at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. Interment followed the service at St. Eloi Catholic Cemetery in Ghent. Military Rites were performed by U.S. American Legion Post 564 of Ghent.
Peter John Janssen was born on February 18, 1917, in Minneota, to Nicholas and Katherine (Wassen-berg) Janssen. He grew up on the family farm near Minneota and attended country schools in Yellow Medicine County. Peter attended three years of school at a vocational tech studying transportation.
Peter and Mary C. (DeSutter) were united in marriage on September 16, 1941.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served until February 14, 1946.
Peter and Mary farmed in the Minneota and Marshall areas from 1946 until retirement in 1978.
He enjoyed fishing, pin bowling, golfing, rolle bolle, playing cards and visiting with family and friends.
He was a member of American Legion Post 564 of Ghent and served as Commander, as Adjutant and conducted the Memorial Day Service for many years.
Peter was active at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. He served as a charter member of the Church Council, was a Trustee from 1988 – 1999 and served as an usher for nine years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Minneota; children: Priscilla (Hollis) Osborn of Las Vegas, NV, Richard (Annie) Janssen of Orlando, FL, Marilyn (David) Gannott of Marshall, Daniel (Joan) Janssen of Marshall, Gregory (Jane) Janssen of Marshall, and Steven (June) Janssen of Fergus Falls; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters: Sister Helen Janssen of St. Paul and Terry Gossen of Minneota.
He was preceded in death by his son Gregory in 1953, parents, eight brothers and four sisters.
