Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn Berends, 96, of Marshall, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Burial followed the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall.
Evelyn died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at the Morningside Heights Nursing Home in Marshall.
Evelyn Bertha (Boer-boom) Berends was born Nov. 20, 1912, in Ghent, to Cornelius and Marie (Van den Berghe) Boerboom. She graduated from St. Agnes School in Ghent.
Evelyn worked hard on her family farm and with local farm families until the time of her marriage. She was united in marriage to Theodore “Ted” Berends June 5, 1939, at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. The couple lived in Glenwood City, Wis., and Cottonwood, for a few years before moving to Grandview Township near Ghent where they continued to farm and raise their family.
In 1969, they retired from farming and moved to Marshall. Evelyn worked as a cook for St. Eloi Catholic School, the Marshall Hotel Cafe, Toni’s Depot, and later the Corner Bar.
She was very involved in the community. She was Past-President of the Ghent American Legion Auxiliary and belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America and Council of Catholic Women in Marshall and the Senior Center in Marshall.
Evelyn was passionate about her handiwork. She gave away countless projects made from knitting, crocheting, embroidery and needlepoint.
In her early retirement she enjoyed travelling and she always loved playing cards and spending time with family.
Survivors include her children Lois (Bob) Jacob of Spicer, Phyllis (Donnie) Labat of Sun City, Ariz., Ernie (Mary Jane) Berends of Glenwood, Wally (Kookie) Berends of McKinney, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers: Corne-lius “Knick” (Marian), Andrew (Peg), Walter Boerboom; sister, Clarice (Bill) Versaevel; sisters-in-law: Nellie Boerboom, June Boerboom, and Ida Louwagie; and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, in 1981; grandson John Jacob; one infant great-granddaughter; and her siblings: Sophia, Theresa, Harry J., John, Joe, Mary and Francis.
