Vikings advance after win over Wabasso PDF Print E-mail

The Minneota Vikings beat Wabasso for the second straight time, 3-0 and this time it earned them a spot in Monday's North Sub-Section semifinals against Lakeview.

They beat Wabasso 25-7; 25-12 and 25-12.

Meanwhile, Lakeview struggled, losing the first two games to Renville County West, 26-24, then 25-23, but came back to win three straight, 25-16, 25-17 and 5-11 to advance to the semifinals against Minneota at 7:30 p.m. Monday at SMSU in Marshall.

Minneota had it easy in the first game as Jenna Hennen served six straight points and Sam Hennen led the hitting and blocking at the net.

The second game found Kelsey Hennen saving two hard kill attempts by Wabasso in a row to help give the Vikings a 9-3 lead. It got as close as 12-9 before Taya Kockelman served six straight for an 18-9 lead and Wabasso never got back the game.

In the final contestt was the hitting of a variety of Vikings that made the difference. Sam Hennen started it out with a two nice kills, then Jenna Hennan had a pair, Ashlynn Muhl added a nice block and a kill and Kockelman tapped the ball over the net for a couple of points. But even after two more Sam Hennen kills, the Vikings led just 12-10.

It wasn't until Kockelman served hree straight points and later Leah Fadness served seven straight to put the game away.

"Our defense was pretty good. We picked up each other tonight," said Sam Hennen.

MACCRAY plays Canby at 6 p.m. Monday at SMSU in Marshall before Minneota plays Lakeview.
