Norma J. Laurier, age 73, of Minneota, MN, formerly of Sioux Falls, So. Dak., passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at a Minneota care center.
Funeral services were on Satur-day, December 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel with Father John Lantsberger officiating. Angelo Polsinelli was soloist, accompanied by Donna Williams. Interment will be at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.
Honorary pallbearers were Norma's grandchildren: Alyson, Jolynn, Melanie, Tom, Kevin and Scott Laurier.
Norma J. Laurier was born on February 29, 1936 to Fredrick and Lucille (Gislason) Gudmundson at Minneota, Minnesota. She attended school in Minneota and graduated from Minneota High School in 1954.
On August 28, 1956 she married Francis Louis Laurier in Minneota, Minnesota. The couple lived in Marshall, MN. In 1967 Francis and Norma moved to Rock Island, Illinois and lived there until 1974 when they returned to Marshall in 1974.
Norma attended Mankato State College in Mankato, MN, and then Southwest State University in 1978, where she earned degrees in Business Administration, Sales Management and Psychology.
As her husband's disease with Multiple Sclerosis progressed, Norma became his primary caregiver for over 20 years until she could no longer care for him at home, and Francis entered a veterans care center in Sioux Falls. Mr. Laurier passed away on June 24, 1991.
While living in Sioux Falls, Norma was an active member of the St. Michael's Parish. She taught CCD classes, sang in the church choir, was an usher and greeter, assisted in the Bible study group and assisted in the nursery.
She was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, PVW and DAV Auxiliaries, BPW and was club historian editor of a newsletter.
She joined Big Brother/Big Sister and had sponsored a brother and sister in Marshall, MN for two years.
Norma organized a MS support group in Marshall, MN.
She loved animals, especially her two shitzu's, Midnight Beau and Mei Ling. She enjoyed music, playing the piano, and taught piano lessons. Her hobbies included needlework, knitting, reading, writing poetry and short stories, extensive book and music collections. She liked to travel, and enjoyed her trips in the U.S., Canada, Switzerland, Germany, France and England. Norma had been a resident of the Minneota Manor Health Care Center since 2005.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; and an infant son.
She is survived by her son, Mike (Ann) Laurier of Watertown, SD; three sisters: Paula (Court) Thorson of Atlanta, GA, Beth (Warren) Johnson of Fairbault, MN, and Lois (Jim) Olson of St. Louis Park, MN; her brother, Peter (Katie) Gudmundson of Eden Prairie, MN; and six grandchildren: Alyson, Jolynn, Melanie, Tom, Kevin and Scott Laurier.
