Esther B. Johnson, 80, Minneota, MN, died Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Minneota Manor Funeral Services were Monday, April 19, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Marshall, MN.
Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD wass in charge of the arrangements.
She taught English in seven countries, including Somalia, Ghana, Poland and Germany. She had also volunteered to teach English to both elementary school children and newly arrived adult immigrants.
Esther B. Johnson was born May 28, 1929 at the family home, the daughter of Lewellyn and Henrietta (Ningen) Johnson.
She grew up and attended rural Country School in the Minneota area.
A graduate of Minneota High School, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Augsburg College and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota.
She taught for 42 years, teaching at Hanley Falls, MN and Marshall, MN.
She was noted for her commitment to help each student in her classroom develop their reading, writing and communication skills to the best of their ability.
In addition, Esther was chairwoman of the St. Stephen Mission Committee and the ELCA Synod Mission Board. She was also Sunday school teacher and Luther League Leader at Hemnes Lutheran Church.In 2002, Esther was inducted into the Pride in the Tiger Foundation Hall of Fame.
In her later years Esther enjoyed writing children’s short stories. Esther loved Jesus Christ and enjoyed sharing Him with others.
Esther is survived by her sister-in-law, Marion Johnson of Minneota, MN; her nieces and nephews, Laurie (Dave) Boom of Montrose, SD, Steve Johnson of Omaha, NE, Tricia (Ken) Paradis of Marshall, MN, Paula (David) Wells of Falling Waters, WV and Joyce (Wes) Shepherd of Marietta, MN along with many great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Alden and Gerald and one sister, Louisa.
