Genevieve Jelen, 95, of Canby passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 201jelen genevieve pic0 at Sanford Canby Medical Center.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m.,  Saturday, August 21, 2010 at St. Leo Catholic Church in St. Leo with Father Brian Oestreich as celebrant.  
Burial was in St. Leo Catholic Cemetery.  Genevieve A. Jelen was born on January 13, 1915 to John and Magdalen (Baierl) Eischens in Burton Twp, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota.  She lived with her family on a farm 2 ½ miles east of St. Leo, where she grew up and attended St. Leo Parochial School.  Following her education, she helped on the family farm.

She was united in marriage to Albert Jelen on June 6, 1938 at St. Leo Catholic Church.  After their marriage, they farmed near St. Leo and moved into St. Leo in 1975.  Albert passed away on April 8, 1995.  She remained in St. Leo until moving to Sylvan Place Apartments in 2006.  She passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 in the Sanford Canby Medical Center in Canby at the age of 95 years, seven months, and five days.
Genevieve was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and the CCW.  She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, puzzles and spending time with her family.  She also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
Grateful for having shared Genevieve’s life are her eight children Joan Citrowske of Canby; Gene (Doreen) Jelen of Canby; Dennis (Louise) Jelen of Canby; Jim (Diane) Jelen of Starbuck; Elaine Kerkvliet of Starbuck; Jerry (Vicki) Jelen of Burnsville; Bob (Lori) Jelen of Canby; Arlene (Bob) Polejewski of Taunton; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister Magdalen Kapolczynsky of Mesa, AZ; two brothers Mervin (Velma) Eischens of St. Leo, Syl Eischens of Pipestone; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; parents; eight siblings; and two sons-in-law John Kerkvliet and Odrean Citrowske.
