Back in the track season Coach Beth Jessen was watching Minneota seventh grader Sariah Cheadle run for the Canby-Minneota squad.
“She’s the missing piece we need,” Jessen said at the time. But Cheadle was a volleyball player. She’s now an eighth grader, did report for cross country and finished third at the Morris Invitational in 16:38, just 19 seconds behind last year’s state entrant and teammate Leah Jessen, who was second in 16:29. “Sariah will be a huge asset to the girls’ team this year,” said Jessen. “She’s a great asset and I’m very excited to have her on the team. It wasn’t enough to give Canby-Minneota-Lincoln HI the team win as Lac qui Parle Valley-Dawson-Boyd scored just 50 points to 55 for Jessen’s squad. But second place was a good start. Dana Kraus, who ran strong last year was 13th, then it fell off to Erin Kamrath in 24th and Haily Citrowske in 35th place. MINNEOTA runners included Sofia Rabaey taking 13th in 9:26 for the Girls JV team; Meghan Travis sixth in the eighth grade race at 9:55 and Jenna Anundson eighth in the eighth grade race at 10:31. NICK STOKS was far and away the best for the fifth place boys’ squad. He ran a 17:40 for fourth. After Stoks, the Canby-Minneota-Lincoln HI squad got a 22nd from Terrence Lacek; 23rd from Luke Jessen and 34th from Whyatt Johansen. MINNEOTA’s Jack Anundson was 78th in 24:32. OTHER FINISHES: The girls’ JV won their event with 20 points, beating Montevideo with 35. The boys JV was third with 70, after Montevideo with 36 and Marshall with 45. The seventh grade boys’ meet was won by Montevideo with 15 points.
