Jessen wins at Willmar, Montevideo PDF Print E-mail

luke in painLuke Jessen, after not running in Willmar due to an injury, collapsed after the race in Montevideo Tuesday. His coach-mother Beth Jessen extended a hand.

Hundreds of runners flocked to Wilmar Saturday — and most of them were from large schools including Hopkins, Moorhead, Fargo North, Hutchinson and Willmar.
When the dust cleared, Canby-Minneota-Lincoln HI’s Leah Jessen stood at the top of the girls bunch after her best time of 15:12.

Tuesday night at Montevideo she did it again, smiled and said her 15:08 was now her best time.

“Leah and Nick both had very strong performances,” said Coach Beth Jessen.
At Willmar Leah Jessen took 30 seconds off her best time and ran with Gabi Swoboda of Redwood Falls  — one of the area’s best girl runners.
“Her goal was to stay with Swoboda. She was able to pull away from her halfway through the race,” said the coach.

The girls team is hoping Morgan Merritt will return in time for sections. She’s been running some JV matches.
Kraus, “Is running better but is still not at 100 percent yet,” said the coach.
To top off the day, boys’ leader Nick Stoks came in third in 16:46.
“Nick came in third to boys who were ranked third and fifth in Class AA,” said Coach Jessen.
Then on Tuesday Stoks ran to a Montevideo championship in 16:37.
The two big finishes at Willmar and Montevideo  didn’t help the CML squad win the meets but the did have the outstanding individual performances.
Sariah Cheadle ran a 16:19 at Willmar, also her best, and finished in 15th place for the CML girls. However, she ran second to Jessen at Montevideo in 15:58 for her best time. “That’s what I wanted to do (get under 16 minutes),” Cheadle said.
Boys senior Luke Jessen didn’t run at Willmar because of a strained hip he suffered in the Fulda run.
However, he ran 16th at Montevideo.
“The boys’ had a great effort at Willmar. Without Luke we moved seventh grader Bily Deslauriers to the varsity. He ended up the third runner for the boys.  If you don’t consider Nick’s place, the next four boys all came in within 21 seconds of each other. They just may be the surprise team at the section meet this year,” said Coach Jessen.
