‘I feel a snack coming on’
OUT & ABOUT
By Gayle VanVooren, Mascot Editor
Do you ever have those nights when you just can’t sleep? What do you do about them?
I awoke the other night and felt like I’d had a full night’s sleep. Yet, it was only 2:20 a.m. and there was plenty of “night” ahead of me. What to do?
Maybe it would have been better to just shut my eyes and pretend for a minute, and perhaps sleep would have taken over. But that’s really not me.
Instead, I got up, wandered around in the dark and finally sat down at my computer and sent off some needed e-mails.
There is a quietness in the middle of the night that is kind of soothing. I can still hear the traffic on Highway 68, and realize that there are truckers out there delivering goods to all parts of the country, and folks coming home after night shifts of work.
But for the most part, it is quiet.
Then you start to hear the sounds you don’t ordinarily hear.
The refrigerator turns on, and it seems so LOUD.
A floor creaks here and there, a fly may buzz around, and the ticking of the clock sets a rhythm you really don’t want to hear.
It’s good to have a book started as a bit of reading can be sleep inducing. Watching TV in the middle of the night is no good - those infomercials are not my idea of entertainment.
And getting absorbed in a movie is a bad thing, for you’re sure to fall asleep in the middle of it and then wonder how it turned out.
So my trick is to head to the computer and write a few friends. They may be surprised when they see the time it was sent, but it certainly won’t keep them awake.
And it may just be a little tiring for the writer - and finally tiredness will lull one back to sleep. It doesn’t seem to matter right now.
Say, I wonder what is in that darn refrigerator.
Much like Dagwood, I feel a snack coming on.....
