The end comes swiftly

The Minneota Mudhens season ended quickly after losing 10-0 to Hadley and 16-2 to Tracy in the Gopher League playoffs.

Earlier they defeated the Milroy Irish, 6-3. The Mudhens ended the season with an 11-11 record in their first season as a new team.

The loss to Tracy was a bitter pill to swallow but centerfielder Tyson Sonnenburg said, "We started really shaky (this year), then we had a nice little run. But this happens."

He added, "We had some injuries that hurt us, but we'll be back next year and we'll be ready to go."

In the win over Milroy, Tony Shaikoski gave up just give hits, no earned runs and fanned 11 hitters. His strong performance was aided by three Justin Greenwood hits.

Sonnenburg had a pair of doubles and a single against Hadley but mental and physical errors did the team in.

The Mudhens were hurt by the fact their best pitcher, Pat O'Brien was hobbled by a foot injury was not able to pitch. He did serve as a designated hitter.

Shaikoski took the loss against Tracy and Nick Marks was the loser against Hadley. Marks pitched well for six innings before errors spelled doom for the Mudhens.

School enrollment outlook very good

By Gayle VanVooren, editor

Minneota School enrollment projections are very good.

About 463 students are expected and the figure may go up.

Supt. Dan Deitte said open enrollment into the district is much stronger than those going out. And he added kindergarten will have about 44 students and a third teacher may be needed.

While it costs money to ad the teacher, the superintendent said, "The students come first. I have the job to be fiscally sound, but I also am looking at a quality education."
