The Chief’s View

Kids’ safety important

As the weather continues to improve, you will see kids moving about town with their friends. Some may be on foot, bikes, scooters, rollerblades, and more.
Summer Recreation and the pool season start soon as well in Minneota, drawing large groups of kids.
As adults and drivers, we need to go above and beyond in watching for kids on the road or crossing the street.
Yes, kids need to be more responsible and yes, parents should do a better job, but at the end of the day we need to do all that we can to prevent a tragic event that could result in the death of a child.
The most important thing you can do is look for and expect to see children on the roadway. The next step is to slow down. I recommend driving 15-20 mph on residential streets.
I also encourage you to roll your windows down and turn down your music so that you can listen to the sounds around you. You will often hear kids before you see them.
Finally, if you see kids, plan on stopping and expect them to dash in front of you, cross the road without looking or weave into your lane on their bike.
If you recognize the child, call me and I will talk to them and their parents to educate them on safety and how to get from one point to another without getting hurt.
Please do your part and help me keep our kids safe this summer.
