Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

I have had the honor of being a member of the United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN) Board of Directors for the past couple years. I’ve learned a great deal and have been very fortunate to see firsthand how the UWSWMN touched the lives of thousands of people in Southwest Minnesota with the many services made available by our community partner programs.
UWSWMN is investing 2020 campaign funds in initiatives, community partner programs and partnerships serving approximately 44,000 local people. The ripple effect extends the impact even further. The priority areas in which we provide funding including health, education, financial stability, hunger, and safety and well-being. These priority areas are touched in every corner of our service area. A few of the local projects we’ve provided funding for include: the Makerspace at Lincoln Elementary to provide a designated STEAM space where students are given tools to explore, invent, and collaborate; Stuff the Bus School supply initiative to provide school supplies to students in need; Kitchen Table Food Shelves of United Community Action to provide supplemental food assistance; Meals on Wheels of Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota to provide nutritious meals and crucial social interaction to high-risk seniors to improve their mental and physical health; Crime Victim Services of New Horizon Crisis Center to provide advocacy, support, and empowerment to those whose lives are impacted by sexual assault and general crime and reduce the occurrence and impact of crime and victimization in our communities. These and other investments are made possible through the contributions of area individuals and businesses.
We are closing this year’s campaign season on Jan. 31, 2022. Thank you for the many donations we have already received towards our fundraising goal. Our service area has always lived up to our reputation of caring for our neighbors. Please consider any amount, great or small to be shared with our community partners. Our service areas include individuals who live in Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Yellow Medicine and portions of Cottonwood, Lac qui Parle, Nobles and Redwood counties. All contributions stay local, your donations are literally helping your neighbor. Your donation will go far, but not far away.
United Way of Southwest Minnesota has been certified in accountability and awarded the Charities Review Council “Meets Standards” Seal. This certification indicates that UWSWMN meets all 25 of the Council’s Accountability Standards-demonstrating accountable and ethical practices. This notable accreditation is the direct result of a hardworking staff and a dedicated board.
