Berg's offer to be
sheriff not needed
P.M. Berg was going to offer his services to be the county sheriff to the county commissioners until the end of the year in case they were unable to secure anyone for the position. But when he arrived in Marshall, he was told that they now had plenty of candidates and his offer was not necessary.

Cole superintendent
of schools in Seattle
Professor T.R. Cole, at one time superintendent of schools at Minneota, has just been elected superintendent of the city schools of Seattle, Wash. At the time that Mr. Cole was elected in Minneota, his leading opponent for the position was Prof. Dunlap, who is now one of the outstanding professors on the faculty of Carleton College. At the time, the Minneota school board was deadlocked, 3-3 on the two men for a long time before they finally decided on hiring Cole as the superintendent. Cole was very well liked here.

Burton farmers donate
$1,400 to hospital fund
Two Burton Township farmers agreed to double their donations toward the fundraising efforts of the Minneota Businessmen's Association to erect a hospital here. The farmers, August Josephson and Robert Flood, agreed to double their donations if the price of hogs was at a certain level when they planned on bringing them to market. Hog prices dropped a little before they sold their pigs, but the price remained above the amount they had agreed on and so the two men turned in their second donation. Josephson had contributed $500 at the start of the drive and added another $500. Flood donated $200 when the drive started and gave another $200.

Curfew regulation
changed by council
There is going to be a change in the curfew law beginning next Monday evening, but the ordinance is going to be rigidly enforced from now on, members of the Village Council decided a meeting last week. Starting next Monday evening, the time for curfew will be changed from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the siren will blow instead of the customary ringing of the fire bell. All youths under the age of 18 who are on the streets or in public places will be sent home, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Telephone strike will
have little effect here
The strike called Monday morning by the National Federation of Telephone Workers has had little effect on services in this community because operators at the local office do not belong to the union. Mrs. Marie Myers, manager of the local office, explained that though the operators here did not belong to the union, they were eligible for membership. She also said that they had the right to join a sympathy walkout and still not belong to the union.

Firemen called to
chimney fire Friday
Minneota firemen were called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Buysse of Minneota Friday afternoon for a chimney fire. The firemen were able to extinguish the fire and no damage was done by the blaze, which overheated the chimney.

April 6, 1972

Jackson named new
Porter Postmistress
Mrs. Murial Jackson, who has held the position of distribution clerk at the Minneota post office, is the new postmistress at Porter. The announcement was made by the regional postmaster of the central region in Chicago. Mrs. Jackson assumed the position that had been held for several years by Mrs. Iver Wollum, who died last autumn. Mrs. Jackson took over her duties this week. She owns a home in Minneota but is expected to eventually move to Porter.

Dero garage mechanic
is injured on the job
Mel Hanson, a mechanic employed by Dero Chevrolet Co. was injured last week when a tube or pipe, which he was using in repairing an automobile flew out of his hand and struck him in the vicinity of his ear, severing an artery. The cut caused considerable bleeding. Hanson was taken to the hospital in Ivanhoe where he received treatment and remained for a few days.

Josephson second in
county spelling contest
Douglas Josephson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Josephson of rural Minneota, took second place in the Lyon County spelling contest last Saturday in Marshall. Students from seven schools participated in the contest won by Terry Langan of Holy Redeemer school in Marshall. Josephson is a seventh-grader at the Minneota Public School.

Music Departments to
perform as fundraiser
The Music Department of Minneota High School, as well as area groups "Spring Fling" on April 15 at the high school gym. This first-ever special event will feature an intermission complete with dessert and coffee. Minneota students will take part in jazz band, Sparkletones and swing choir. Also expected to take part in the program are the Community Jazz Band and a new group called "Dixieland Combo". The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to assist the music department with musical instruments and more.

Police investigating
possible abduction
The Minneota Police Department was alerted to a possible abduction attempt of a teenage female last Tuesday, April 1, according to Police Chief Eric Johnson. Chief Johnson reported that a juvenile female between 12 and 16 years old said she was approached by an unknown male. The male allegedly attempted to make contact with the juvenile female and got out of his truck and approached her. She then fled on foot. The location of the incident and the exact age of the juvenile has not been released, with the matter still under investigation by the Minneota Police Department.

Kevin Fier receives
dairy production award
Kevin Fier of Taunton was awarded Top First-Year Lactation Heifer Award at the Lyon-Lincoln County Dairy Herd Improvement Association's annual meeting. Production awards for the top herd, top cow and top three-year rolling herd average went to Gary Stassen of Marshall. Production awards are based on milk production, butterfat, protein and dollar value.
