Considered a theatre classic, "The Cherry Orchard" is SMSU Theatre’s first-ever production of a full-length Chekhov play. Alternately funny and poignant, "The Cherry Orchard" follows Lyubov and her family in 1904 as the fate of their cash-poor estate and its beautiful orchard is uncertain. Colorful personalities and clashing ideals complicate matters, against a backdrop of social and economic transition that signals the end of the family’s way of life.
"The Cherry Orchard" is directed by Professor Nadine Purvis Schmidt of Estelline, S.D., who is also the producer. Professor Sheila Tabaka of Marshall is the costume designer. Assistant Professor Tetta M. Askeland of Marshall is the scenic and sound designer. Maggie Tabaka, a freshman from Marshall, is the stage manager.
The cast and production team includes: Jasper Ale of Nigeria, Tailer Benson of Elk River, Brady Berg of Wells, Alexis Christensen, an SMSU alumnus; Alexander Duus of Tyler, Molly Green of Silver Lake, Matthew Hartley of Winner, SD; Roger Heinrich of Austin, Colton Jensen of Sanborn, Makayla Kennedy of Stewartville, Bryn Mongeau of Beaver Creek, Jim Radloff of Lynd, Bob Schwoch, an SMSU Theatre Arts alumnus; Jordan Stangeland of Marshall, Allyson Thuringer of Sioux Falls, Joy Krosschell of Wells, and Sara Karpen of Tea, S.D.
