Southwest Minnesota Orchestra Concert May 1

The Southwest Minnesota Orchestra will present “Song of the Prairie: A Celebration of Music for the University” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 1 at the Schwan’s Community Center for the Performing Arts at Marshall High School.

“The concert finishes off the end of our year-long 50th anniversary celebration of the university,” said Daniel Rieppel, Southwest Minnesota Orchestra director.

The concert will feature music by Aaron Copland, Robert Whitcomb and Johannes Brahms.

It will feature the world premieres of Songs of the Prairie, music by Jacelyn Hagen, Jesse Lee, Daniel Rieppel and Peter Lothringer, based on southwest Minnesota poets Philip Dacey, Bill Holm, Susan McLean and John Rezmerski.

The works is commissioned by, and features, Dr. Anna DeGraff, mezzo-soprano soloist.

The concert will also feature graduating SMSU senior Paul Schell performing “Can We Adventure Again?”
