Emergency entrance at Avera

Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center is preparing to begin the second phase of a remodeling project to expand its Emergency Department.

During this phase, patients and ambulance staff will access the Emergency Department through a temporary entrance, and care will be delivered in the temporary Emergency Department space constructed during phase one of the project.

Beginning April 6, the emergency entrance was relocated to the mobile imaging door in the middle of the hospital building, northeast of the current entrance.

Patients push a button to request entry into the building, just as they do now.

Emergency Department staff goes to the door to escort patients to the Emergency Department.

Patients and visitors going to the facility for needs other than emergency care should use the main entrance under the large canopy.

This remodeling project began in January 2018 and will double the square footage and redesign the space to better suit the volume of patients and type of care provided in the Avera Marshall’s Emergency Department today.

The new design will enhance patient privacy, staff efficiency, safety and security.

The Emergency Department was last remodeled in 1997, when the hospital served fewer than 4,900 emergency patients per year.

In 2016, 7,800 patients were seen in the ED — a 60 percent increase from nearly 20 years ago.

Phase two of the project includes constructing an external addition to the building and additional internal renovations.

This phase will last through the end of 2018. The full project is expected to be completed in early 2019.
