Locals contribute to hurricane fund

Thanks to Minneota residents, the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund will be getting over $20,000 to assist those families that lost their homes, vehicles and belongings in the recent storm.

“The Hurricane Harvey relief effort during Boxelder Bug Days raised over $6,000 through donations and from the local churches,” said Scott Josephson, who instigated the fundraising efforts.

Of that amount, $4,000 was matched from the Hope Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund for a total of over $10,000.

“Thrivent Financial has also indicated that it would match any donations (up to $3 million),” said Josephson. “So the $10,000-plus that Minneota raised will be doubled to over $20,000.”

The five churches in Minneota all raised money for Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

Hope Lutheran Church took up a second collection at a Sunday service, as well as matching up to $4,000 from its Endowment Fund, while St. Edward's Catholic Church, Hemnes Lutheran Church and Bethel Fellowship Church all took up monetary collections.

St. Edward's also collected supplies to be sent to Texas. St. Paul's Lutheran Church participated in the Lutheran Disaster Relief program through Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America. That money will be used for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma victims.

The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that more than 37,000 homes were heavily damaged and nearly 7,000 others were completely destroyed.

There were also tens of thousands homes that sustained some minor damage. Over 350,000 individuals have now sought federal emergency aid in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
