Mark Buysse named new Lyon County assessor

Lyon County has a new County Assessor. The county board Tuesday hired Mark Buysse to fill the vacancy left by Sherri Kitchemaster, who resigned to take another position.

Buysse is a native of Tracy and says, “I was born and raised there.”

“I’ve been working for the county for four years and I’ve enjoyed it very much,” he said. His appointment begins now and continues until Dec. 31, 2020. Buysse has been working in the assessor’s office. Commission Chairman Gary Crowley said he, “Has the necessary knowledge, training and accreditation in the field of property taxation to qualify him for the position.”

The county board will recommend his hiring to the Minnesota Commissioner of Revenue. They, too, will need to approve the appointment.

IN OTHER action the board:

•Approved increasing the solid waste special assessment fee $20 “across the board,” for everyone getting curbside and rural recycling services. Last month, the board approved a new recycling agreement and indicated that they would probably increase the assessment fee by $20.

This action makes that proposal official. During a public hearing regarding the recycling contract, most residents testified they would rather see an increase in the recycling assessment than an end to the curbside recycling program.

•Approved Clifton Larson Allen of Alexandria to do the audit of the county from 2020 to 2022. The board accepted an option that will improve the flow and timeliness of the audit, said Lyon County Auditor-Treasurer E. J. Moberg.

•Approved hiring Sean Kirk as a correctional officer starting around November 21. Hiring Kirk brings the county jail to full recommended staffing levels.
