Mary Johnson of Minneota located the hidden Medallion A in the shelter at Riverside Park, while Laney, Landin and Libby Moore found Medallion B by the sign at C.E. Eastwold Park.

Medallions and more were found

The Medallion Hunt went off without a hitch during Boxelder Bug Days and organizers are planning to bring it back again next year.

“We're going to make it a little tougher to find the medallions next year,” said Stephanie Vlaminck, who organized the event with Barb Rye and Dave Fahey.

Because the two medallions were located on the first day of the hunt, only one clue was needed.

The plan was for a different clue to be launched for four consecutive days, Tuesday through Friday, leading up to Boxelder Bug Days.

Mary Johnson of Minneota located the hidden Medallion A in the shelter at Riverside Park, while Laney, Landin and Libby Moore found Medallion B by the sign at C.E. Eastwold Park.

The clue used for Medallion A was: “Search high, search low, I hear the water flow”.

And Medallion B’s clue was: “Search high, search low, I, too, hear the water flow”. Johnson received a $10 gift certificate to Brad’s Market, a $10 gift certificate to J’s Dream, and a $50 gift certificate to the Arched Door/Gislason’s Hardware.

The Moores received a $10 gift certificate to the Arched Door/Gislason’s Hardware, a $10 gift certificate to B Lenore, and a $50 gift certificate to Brad’s Market.

“Because the medallions were found so early in the week, Barb and I put together another hunt,” Vlaminck said.

“Barb was kind enough to collect 25 rocks, spray paint them bright gold, and subsequently write a number on each rock.”

“The number on the rock corresponded to a prize that was redeemed at the Arched Door during the week of Boxelder Bug Days. The rocks were hidden all over town. It was a fun way to continue to allow the community to play along with us.”

All 25 gold-painted rocks were found. The three-inch aluminum medallions were designed and engraved with a boxelder bug and “Winner 2017” on the top of each one by Minneota native Charlie Callens at Guza Machine Inc. where he works in Ivanhoe.

The hunt had been a part of Boxelder Bug Days in the past, but had been on hiatus for several years until it was started up again by organizers this year.

Those involved in the hunt were instructed that the medallions would be hidden on city property such as parks or trails, but would exclude Veterans Park because it is currently undergoing construction for a new pavers system, as well as school property and private property.
