Sheriff Mather announces retirement

Lyon County Sheriff Mark Mather has decided not to file for re-election this year.

“After 33 years of public safety, I have decided not to file,” Mather said on Tuesday.

He will retire at the end of his term in January, 2019.

Mather said he doesn’t have future employment in mind but did say, “I’ll find something to do.”

But in essence, this is a retirement. Mather has been Lyon County Sheriff for 10 years.

“It was a difficult decision for me to decide to leave my office,” he said.

“I would like to thank my staff for the work they do each day. It’s my pleasure to work with them to bring quality public services to Lyon County.”

During his time as sheriff, a new communication system was installed, the jail was remodeled and updated and Sheriff Mather has set several marks in improvement and operation of the sheriff’s department.

Under his tenure as sheriff, he also has maintained several contracts for sheriff coverage in county communities.

The sheriff also thanked Lyon County residents for their support over the years.
