Phyllis Marie Polman

Phyllis Marie Polman, age 78 of Clarkfield, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Clarkfield Care Center where she resided since February 25, 2018.

Phyllis was diagnosed with amyloidosis in 2011 and fought a hard battle.

Services for Phyllis will be at 11 a.m. March 8, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo with Father Paul Timmerman and Father Mark Mallak celebrants.

Burial will be in St. Edward Catholic Cemetery in Minneota.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 7 from 5-7 p.m. with 6:30 rosary at Lynner Funeral Home in Clarkfield.

Visitation with the family will continue one hour to services Thursday. Phyllis was born May 19, 1939 at home in Burton Township, Yellow Medicine County to Philip and Thekla (Hartmann) Hoffmann.

She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Leo Catholic Church, St. Leo and was a member of the St. Anna Society.

During her younger years while living with her parents, she enjoyed helping around the farm.

Phyllis attended St. Leo Catholic School for 8 years and Clarkfield High School for 4 years, graduating in 1958.

Phyllis married Edward Polman at St. Leo Catholic Church on August 29, 1961.

To this union three children were born; Kathleen, Ronald and Karen. Following their marriage they farmed for one year north of Minneota, then moved to Minneota where she and Ed owned and operated Ed’s Café for 6 ½ years.

In 1969, the family moved to Clarkfield.

While in Clarkfield, Phyllis was a housewife for several years and when all her children started school, she found employment for 9 1/2 years as a waitress and cook at Harry’s Drive Inn and Helen’s Café and for the next 26 years as a housekeeper at the Clarkfield Hospital and the Clarkfield Care Center, retiring in 2005.

After retiring, she enjoyed volunteering at the Clarkfield Care Center.

Also while in Clarkfield she belonged to a Homemakers Club for several years and also worked part-time at the food shelf.

She enjoyed camping, walking, doing crafts, making greeting cards, reading, and doing word search puzzles. She also enjoyed making scrap books, doing embroidery and crocheting for her children and grandchildren.

In her younger years, Ed and Phyllis enjoyed square dancing. For fun, Phyllis enjoyed her greenhouse and growing flowers and vegetables from seed and spending time with her grandchildren. Phyllis made Belgium cookies at Christmas time for her family and sold dozens of cookies to the community.

Phyllis was active at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Clarkfield as President of the Altar and Rosary Society, Treasurer and CCD Teacher. After the church’s closing, she joined St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Montevideo and was active in the choir for a while and as a Eucharistic Minister until her illness.

Phyllis was a member of Catholic Aid since 1955.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of 56 years Edward of Clarkfield; son Ronald (Jean) of Cottonwood; daughter Karen (Steven) Trost of Marietta; grandchildren Katherine, Shawn and Kari Polman all of Cottonwood MN; brother Wilfred (Marlene) Hoffmann of Marshall MN; sisters-in-law Claire Hoffmann and Marian Hoffmann both of Minneota and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Thelka Hoffmann; daughter Kathleen in 1969; and sisters Ludwina, Rosalie and Marietta Hoffmann and Eleanor Blomme; brothers Floribert and Germain Hoffmann and four siblings in infancy. Blessed be her memory.
