Sister Grace Maertens

Sister Grace Maertens, 91, of St. Paul, died Friday, April 26, at Carondelet Village in St. Paul.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel in St. Paul.

Burial is set to follow at Resurrection Cemetery following lunch in Carondelet Center.

This fun-loving, life-long elementary teacher and “Right to Read” leader was born March 8, 1926 on a small farm near Ghent, MN.

Grace was an outdoors woman, loved all the animals, and horses were her favorite. She was an experienced gardener and a 4-H member, she also enjoyed sports, especially the TWINS, and she never passed up a good card game.

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet taught Grace at St. Eloi School in Ghent (grades 1- 8). She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1944 in St. Paul.

Grace earned a BA from the College of St. Catherine in 1957 majoring in English and Elementary Education. She taught students in grades 4-6 for 45 years in St. Paul at Nativity, St. Vincent and St. Mark schools, at St. Thomas the Apostle in Minneapolis, Nativity of Mary in Bloomington, and in Graceville, Waverly and Minneota, where she became a teaching principal.

She is survived by her brother David and sister Doris, many nieces and nephews, caregivers at Carondelet Village, Sisters of St. Joseph and Consociates.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Hero J. Maertens and Mary Buysse Maertens, siblings Hero, Joan, Earl, Donald and Richard (Dick).

Memorials are preferred to the Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Fund.
