Pitching was “good last year,” said Coach Heidi Boerboom.

And along came a pitching coach

Pitching was “good last year,” said Coach Heidi Boerboom.

But her face absolutely lights up when she says, “Pitching is looking real good.” Some of that is due to the fact that Katy Boettger played softball in Dawson and works in Minneota, volunteered to help the pitching corps.

Boerboom said, “Boettger just came in and wanted to help out and she’s been valuable toward the growth of the pitching staff.”

“She’s doing a good job with the pitchers,” said Boerboom.

The two “aces” of the Minneota staff last year both return in seniors Brooklyn Nelson and Sydney Larson.

The two senior hurlers alternate between second base and the mound and will both bring a lot of mound experience to this team.

“They both pitched well last year and are even better now,” said Boerboom. They will throw to experienced sophomore catcher Abby Hennen, who has a good arm and can throw down runners— plus work with the pitching staff.

Most of the Vikings varsity players are from Minneota, with the exceptions of senior outfielder Abby Rangaard, sophomore utility player Shelby Sik and shortstop/outfielder Kaylee Johnson.

“Mostly, the girls have looked good. We only lost one player, Katie Friehl in the outfield so we have a lot back,” said the coach.

Audra Buysse is returning after starting most of last year for the Vikings. Also adding experience to this squad are senior shortstop/outfielder Emily Pohlen, Katie Konold at first and Madison Scholten in a utility role.

A number of youngsters are also vying for spots on the team. They include: McKenzie Tolk, Lexi Sanow, Summer Hennen, and pitcher Ava Larson.

As of Monday, the team had not been outside at all. But Boerboom was hoping to change that this week.
