Back to their winning ways

Vikings' teams all win openers

It seems like a lot longer time than it has actually been since winter sports have been played, but the Minneota Vikings' teams didn't seem to miss a beat.
Due to some scheduling changes, the boys and girls basketball and the wrestling teams all played at home on the same day for their season openers. And all three came away with impressive wins.
It was 10 months ago that the Minneota girls basketball team were preparing for their Class A state semifinal game when officials cancelled the remainder of the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
And then the start of the winter sports season was delayed this year due to the pandemic. The girls basketball team seemed to play with little rust from all the idleness and rolled past MACCRAY 70-38 in a Camden Conference game on Saturday night.
"We looked good as a team," said girls basketball coach Chad Johnston. "It was a good start to our season."
Prior to that game, the boys basketball team came up with a 75-70 victory over Camden Conference and Section 3A nemesis Dawson-Boyd. Senior forward Jacob Hennen hit a close-range shot for his 1,000th career point with nine minutes left in the first half. He finished with 24 points.
And the wrestlers posted a pair of wins in a home triangular against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Fulda/Murray County Central. The Vikings topped TMB/WWG 47-24 and steamrolled Fulda/MCC 70-6. Those matches marked the first varsity competitions held in the renovated auxiliary gym. Coaches and players were pleased to finally get the season underway.
"I think getting into mat shape will be the hardest, with less practice time and the way we have to run practices due to COVID," said wrestling coach Matt Myrvik. "We will have to be creative to improve in this area. I do think most teams are in the same situation and we will see how it progressive throughout the year."
