On the Bench with Byron Higgin
The first year of the softball tournament at Boxelder Bug Days went rather well — despite a few setbacks. The tournament was won by, “The Gambler” of Marshall, a team stacked with good players, including Barry Meyer, who played for the Mudhens and Marshall A’s baseball teams and just about any softball team I can think of.
“We had a good time. It was a lot of fun,” said Jerren Roberts, who helped get the tournament together.
He and others played on a Minneota Bug team that won a couple of games.
There originally were seven teams but two dropped out so five teams finished the tournament in one day — Saturday, and Sunday was not needed. Most of these tournaments take a couple of years to get popular and known.
So officials felt they may come back with another year of the tournaments and see what happens. Despite the lack of teams, it appears everyone had a good time.
