C/M girls first, boys 2nd in opener

The Canby/Minneota girls edged Redwood Valley by one point to win the four-team Lakeview cross country meet last Tuesday in Cottonwood.
The Canby/Minneota boys finished second to Redwood Valley.
Braelyn Merritt, a junior from C/M, won the girls' meet in a time of 20:16. Her teammate, sophomore Claire Stoks, was second in 21:08.
The other three C/M finishers were Hannah Vlaminck, a sophomore, 10th in 23:32; Hannah Fadness, a sophomore, 11th in 23:51; and Nohemi Diaz, a sophomore, 13th in 24:38.
Will Ahrens of Redwood Valley won the boys' meet in 16:58.
Kolton Duis, a sophomore from C/M, came in second in 11:17, followed by Zach Ourada, a C/M junior, in third in 17:20.
The other three C/M runners were Blake Giese, a sophomore, in sixth place in 18:08; freshman Hunter Danielson, 13th in 19:36; and junior Colton Ruether, 14th in 19:44.
All 22 Canby/Minneota boys and girls runners improved their times from a year ago at this season-opening meet.
"Our times were fantastic," said coach Allyson Pesek. "What a great first race. I'm excited to see where we go from here."
NOTE: Thursday's meet in Canby was cancelled because of the heat and humidity, per Minnesota State High School League guidelines.
