Depleted Vikings go 1-2 in triangular

A depleted Minneota squad opened their wrestling season on Friday in the Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale/Parkers Prairie Triangular, winning one of three matches.
Minneota, which began the season ranked No. 5 in Class A by The Guillotine wresting publication, forfeited four weight classes due to several wrestlers still getting into shape following a lengthy football season.
Minneota topped Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale/Parkers Prairie 39-36, but fell to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 55-18 and Minnewaska Area 45-24. BBE is ranked No. 2 in Class A.
Eighth-grader Adam DeVlaeminck, who is rated No. 2 in Class A at 106 pounds, won all three of his matches at 106 pounds, two by first-period pins. Junior Zack Fier, ranked No. 5 at 160 pounds, also went 3-0 with two pins at 160 and 170. Senior Jonah Gruenes, wrestling at 170 and 182 pounds, won all three of his matches, one by fall. Gruenes is ranked No. 2 at 170 pounds.
Peyton Gillund, a junior rated No. 7 at 126, won two of his three matches. Kade Lozinski, a senior, went 2-1 on the day at 138 and 145 pounds. Eli Gruenes, a freshman, went 1-1 at 160 and 170.
Two ranked wrestlers missing from the Minneota lineup were Jackson Esping, No. 5 at 220 pounds, and Jayden Gamrak, No. 2 at 285 pounds.
